fuel pump problems
I have an '83 that I purchased with out a Carb on it.
I am trying to get it running.
I swapped a carb on, but there was no fuel getting to the carb.
There was a switch on the dash (with a light) that I think is a fuel pump shut off switch. However, the light would not come in in either position. I followed the wires, one went to a ground and the other to a relay on the left fender by the firewall. The has a five prong connector and says "Bosch" on it. I can't find the relay in any of my other first gen cars and from the hanyes manual, it appears that it could be a relay for an Auto Transmission (the car has a 5sp though....)
I connected the two wires from the switch together and then I pulled the storage bin and tested the fuel pump relay for power. There was none.
I checed all the fuses in the box by the drivers door (I don't have a fuel box diagram) and they were all good.
So I ran a jumper wire from the positive and negative terminals of the battery back to the fuel pump connector.
I heard the pump "hum" but no fuel came came out of the fuel line by the carb. I checked the fuel filter and it fuel flows through it.
So what the hell is going on?! What else can I chech?
Thanks for the help!

Fuel filter is not blocked, there is gas in the tank...
I will look for a kink in the line....
But there seems to be two problems
1) no power to fuel pump
2) Fuel pump "hums" with a jmper wire, but no fuel comes out of lines.

i had a gunked gas tank lines. also the hardline running the floor pan had rusted and gooed some. i ended up pulling the line at both ends, spraying in pb, and then blowing through the lines to free them up. might want to blow through them first to see if there already free. might have to drop the tank and see if you can blow through the hardlines in the tank. first things first. replace the filter as you will do that to begin with anyway.

Hi.
Let's start with the fuses:
The fuse for the fuel pump is 20A. It is on one of the corners of the fusebox. The one next to it is 15A, and then 10A. It might be a good idea to clean the metal ends of it with sandpaper, and bend the contacts in a little, just to make sure it is a good contact.
There is a plug socket in each of these cars that is designed for an auto transmission. If it is hooked up in a 5 speed car, the car won't start. I don't know if that has anything to do with the relay you have there, but is it possible that the previous owner was using that as a form of kill-switch? I remember someone on the forum having problems with this in the past. A search should find that thread. Obviously, it's hard to know what the purpose of the switch is from the limited information (and my general automotive ignorance), but my point is that having the wires joined up may be a bad thing.
I would try hotwiring the pump again, and this time keeping it running for a little while. It can take a little time for the fuel to work its way through. That would at least bring you down to one problem!
My pump died a few weeks ago. One thing that caused me problems was the wiring. I thought that it would not matter which way around the wires were, but that is not the case. One of the wires has to be the positive, and the other the negative.
What else? There is an arrow on the fuel pump. Make sure it is pointing in the right direction. If you have never seen the car running, then it is theoretically possible that the fuel lines going into and out of the pump are the wrong way around.
How about giving us an update?
Good luck,

Update
I got the car started (with a jumper wire from the battery to the pump)... It won't idle/run below 2k rpm, but seems to have okay power. Plugs don't look great (MMO treatment) or the carb could be loading up.
Anyway, there was a clamp on the fuel line between the pump and filter. So it appears the PO was messing around with the fuel pump.
I checked all the fuses under the dash... there are all good.
I am assuming it is not a problem with a bad ground as the there is no power when I test the relay by the pump.
