Fuel pump not pumping!

Was driving along last week and my car died. There was no fuel in the bowls and the pump wouldnt come on when I turned the key, so I ordered a new one. I put it on a bit ago and the pump still wont come on. Any suggestions? Yes, I reconnected the pump inside the car. Yes, there IS fuel in the car - it poured out when I pulled the filter. Yes, I replaced the fuel filter at the same time. There is a little plastic thing up by the tank w/ fuel lines going into it...what is it for and could it be the cause?

Ignitor?

Fuel pump Relay?

I am making the Assumption that you have an 84+ car.

The plastic thing near the tank is the check/cut valve, it stops the flow of fuel when your car flips.

Yes, its an 85 car. Isn't the ignitor for the ignition system? Where is the fuel pump relay?

*Edit - I jsut did some searching and the ignitor does seem to be the cause - that is weird to me(I also didnt notice the tach drop before it died). So, I will go swap those out and see if that helps...those are the thigns attached to the distributor correct?
Also, jsut incase, I would still like to know where the FP relay is.

Thanks

Under the Dash. Search for it there is a great pic on the archive of where it is and how to jump it to test the pump.

84+ cars have the pump not work if there is no spark to help with flooding so if the ignitor goes bad the pump does not get signal to work.

the pics are absent - there is a description as to where it is, but how do I need to jump it? Also, I can hear my FP when the car is off, maybe jsut when I try to start it and it doesn't, I dont remember...

Are the sight windows on the carb showing fuel? If not, is the tach moving while cranking for start? If not, check/replace trailing ignitor, if yes, check the 'engine' fuse under the dash. If those are all good, pull the plugs, if they are wet, clean/dry them. You might have flooded the engine after replacing the pump.

No, the bowls were dry even after replacing the pump and here's why:
I'm blowing a fuse when I "give it the beans"...I can run to the top of first and heading up in 2nd when it blows. The first time it blew, I had my foot into it going up a hill on the highway.

I'm going to look around for any bad connections/crossed wires, unless you have any other suggestions.

Also, it didn't solve my problem, but man if there are people who havent done it yet, ADD ANOTHER ENGINE GROUND! Before, if I touched the plug wires near the distributor or spark plugs, I would get a fun little shock, now, nothing Man, I love bad grounds...

Put a volt meter on the Alt and then rev the engine.

Check the hole in the floor under the bin on the drivers side, this is where the fuel pump wires go through and often wear until they ground, easy fix just rewire the section and add more insulation for future.

Little plastic thing is the rollover shutoff valve, unlikely to be the cause.
