Unhappy Fuel Pump

1980 Rx7, Fuel pump replace three years ago, very little usage.
From time to time the fuel pump will not pump gas ( you can hear the pump working right before starting), Battery seems fully charge. Last time few years ago i took it in to the dealer thet say it was the battery
Now is starting again
Does any one has a similar experience and comments as of what it might be the
problem?

Thanks in advance

Happened to me once at a gas station. I ended up just buying a new pump and the problem never came back. Now I'm running aftermarket though

Check the fuel pump relay under the dash. Mine had a problem like this not to long ago and it was the relay. If you have the haynes book it will tell you how to jumper it to test it. I left it jumpered and put an in line fuse (10amp) in. problem solved

If the pump is running, then it's more than likely good since it hasn't had that much usage. More likely the pickup tube inside the tank is plugging or the rubber hose between the tank and pump is shot and pulling air instead of fuel. There is also a short metal line between the tank and pump that 's mounted to the backside of the bin. I've had one of those leak due to rust between the line and body.

Pull the fuel line off before the carb and see if it's getting any fuel.

Word of advice, never take your 7 to the dealer. If you do, take your banker and a jar of Vaseline.

I hear you Bro, Took it there once as an emergency, Once! I know. I get some of the parts from them from time to time.
By the way, the fuel pump is not running, it does not make the sound,
T

I discarded the idea of the relay since they say had none, but it might be just that!

Thanks

Hey ty97206! Is it possible you can send me, email or fax, the page where it
explains and shows how to jumper the relay?

If you could that would be great

Thanks

Juan's car started out as an SA... and SA's have no fuel pump relay.

SA fuel pump is powered directly from the ignition switch, same BW circuit that powers the igniters.

Thanks DivinDriver; forgive my ignorance, but what is an SA ?, Would it be a fuse?
All fuse seems fine!

Juan, you're going to want to download these manuals... pure gold for those of us with first gen's:

Factory Service Manual (also known as FSM)
http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/80_manual.html
Wiring Diagram
http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/19...ingDiagram.pdf
Parts microfiche (gives part numbers, exploded-view drawings, etc)
http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/parts_manuals/79-80

Reading through the FAQ section here in the 1st gen forum will help you get up to speed on the abbreviations and slang, too.
https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/1st-gen-rx-7-faq-page-237777/

We all of us start somewhere, that's a great place to get started!

U.S.-destined RX-7's from 1978-1980 had a VIN number that started with SA22C then a 6-digit serial number, and so are known as "SA" or "Series 1" cars.

In 1981, The feds mandated all mfg's to use the long VIN numbers. These started with "J1N" and contained the model numbers "FB" for 81 through 85 cars.

Welcome aboard!

Fuel pump relay didn't show up until 84. If you're still looking for yours, maybe I should take you snipe hunting. Bring gunney sacks and a flashlight.
