fuel gauge problems.

My fuel gauge was messed up for a while. when i would fill the tank up, the gauge would only go to 3/4, and it would never be consistant. and it would go down gradually as i would drive (like any normal guage) until it got to about 1/4, then it would just drop off to below E. Now, lately i havent seen it get up past about 1/8 tank.

I know the things i need to check are, but i was hoping this info might be able to help narrow my search down to the problem.

Any suggestions?

thanks.

Mine used to do that and I had to replace my gauge cluster (for other reasons) and it worked great with the new gauge in. also you can take your cluster out and clean the contact points on the back and that might help.

The manual has test procedures for the guage and sending unit. If you don't have a manual, look in the FAQ section for links to online manuals.

I'd bet it's the sending unit in the fuel tank. This is exactly what mine did, now I use the trip meter to tell me when to fill up.

Mazdatrix has replacement sending units for about $70. I just replaced mine. Old one was rusted up so bad you I could hardly tell what it was...
