fuel gauge doesnt work does anyone have pictures of where the sending unit

hi
my fuel gauge doesnt work
i did some searches and I'm pretty sure its the sending unit.
i pulled the left rear tire but didn't see where these wires are.
are they behind the wheel well cover?
or do i need to drop the tank?
i really don't want to do that. if i dont have to.
does anyone have any pictures that would help.
i would really appreciate it if you do.
thanks
Don

If you take off left tire and lay on ground facing up towards the gas tank you should see where the fuel fill tube is and the sending unit assembly is towards rear and down from that.

Try cleaning off the contacts before you start dropping the tank. The gauge is resistance based so if there is more corrosion it wont read correctly. As in, read 3/4 when full because there is the corrosion on the contacts.

my sending units contact broke off when I went to clean them.... Ive been driving for 1.5 - 2years without a gas gauge. ran out of gas 2 times, once in the dead of a canadian winter, lots of warm up time.... next time my carb was flooding itself for a period, otherwise i just make sure I fill up every 300 kms. I was going to swap the sending unit but it looks as if its rivetted in....

When you get the sending unit out, carefully pry open the cover. If the wires that are wound around the bar look like the pick below, it's toast.

Good morning
thanks for the replies
When i checked it yesterday i found that my connection is broke off the tank, basically toast
i don't know if i could i can try and epoxy it back on the top of the sending unit.
so i think i will have to get a new sending unit
When i take off the sending unit ,would you spray penetrating oil on the bolts first to loosen them?

I just got me car running, and mine is not working either. I'm gonna test it, b/c they aren't cheap ($111 through mazdatrix). Hopefully it is a loose wire.

Lots of P B Blaster on the screws that hold the unit in the tank. Spray a couple of times and let it soak over night. You will probably need an impact screw driver to break the screws loose, and this will require dropping the tank. Don't know what an impact screw driver is, go to Sears.
