front cover removal

i've been having a problem with oil pressure lately and i tried cleaning the oil pressure sensor but that didn't do anything. when i start it up it will go to about 30 and then drop to 0. i know about the mechanical gauge to see if the stock gauge is bad, but i also have a pretty good leak coming from what seems to be the front cover so i'm thinking i might have a blown o ring. my question is what do you have to do to get the front cover off? i got the haynes but it sucks. Do you have to pull the engine or can you do it on jack stands. i think you have to take all the belts and pulleys off and the oil pan. i'm new to rx-7s so i'm not quite familiar with them yet. another question is where to you get o rings and gaskets at? do most major parts stores carry them or do you have to special order them? if anybody has a good picture of the front cover off that would help too. thanks

Well you are going to need an engine hoist, or jack to hold the engine up. In the first gen rx-7, the engine is bolted to the subframe with a crossmember that bolts to the front cover. So to remove the front cover the engine the engine has to be supported from below, as the front cover is what bolts it to the chassis.

Once you've done that, remove all the bolts on the front cover, and remove the pulley hub. remove the dizzy as well. You dont technically need to remove the oilpan, you just need to re seal it up really good afterword. Make sure you do an oil change after this too. The gaskets can be purchased from your local mazda dealer, or a third party company like mazdatrix.

Be VERY CAREFULL! You can shift/drop the front rotating assembly when you pull off the main pulley. If the needle bearings drop off the collar and you reassemble, bye bye motor.

that bearing can't drop unless you unbolt the big 19mm bolt in the middle of the pulley's right? I took off the extra pulley's that were stacked on the front of my motor to run the airpump/ ac ect. That wouldn't cause the bearing to drop would it?
