front cover mod

I'm in the process of putting a s5 turbo ii into a first gen and am at a cross roads as regards the front cover. As you know, first gen motor mount is at front and s5 is on the sump. Do I :

1) drill, tap, weld s5 cover so as to accomodate first gen engine mount
2) replace cover with other cover (which specific one ?) and perform mod
for turbo return line.

I'm leaning towards (2) above. Has anyone done this before ? Also, as the sump has to be changed anyays to clear the steering, which sump would be the right one to use ?

thanks guys

I think this has been covered before... Use the 12A or GSL-SE 13B front cover for the 1st gen engine mounts (Or swap in the FC subframe and use the stock FC mounts, steerng, and front suspension.) And use the GSL-SE oil pan.

EDIT: Except you're in South Africa, where I dunno if they got the GSL-SE... If not, I believe there's performance shops that sell a larger capacity oil pan for the 1st gen... Get it for the 1.3 liter version.

The stock GSL-SE 13B oil sump is the only factory part that will fit with the stock steering and subframe intact.
Using the GSL-SE oil sump will require you to modify a 1st gen front cover to accept the S5 oilmetering pump. This is because the front sump bolts follow a different pattern on the S4-S5 engines, than they do on the 1st gen engines. You cant use a S5 cover with a 1st gen oil sump.

There are 2 alternatives to all this however, one of which Ive tried and it works...

You can ditch the entire factory computor and run a simple mechanical oil metering pump from a S4.Costs a bit more, but a standalone is far more reliable and powerful/tunable than the stock ECU.

Or you can install any 1st gen front cover you want, install a block off plate and run premix oil.The trick is to keep the electronic S5 oil metering pump plugged into the stock ECU.This will keep the ECU happy and prevent it from going into limp mode.I just tied the oil metering pump off to the side and covered up the outlet ports to keep out dirt.Without a mechanical connection to the engine, the pump doesnt spin,so no oil is needed for internal lubrication. The stepper motor just does its thing "in and out",and the sensor watches it.The pump did fine for weeks, the computor had no idea, and I just premixed carfully until the modified front cover was ready.

you can normally order US-parts (like GSL-SE oil pan) in other markets too. I did this, and it took a few weeks to arrive. I used a 1st gen 12A front cover, modified to accept oil drain from the turbo. I have a stand-alone ECU, and a mechanical OMP from a 12A (spliced the lines) as the others won't fit.
