Front Cover Gasket??????

Im leaking coolant only when the engine is cold, like -20. But its not from the water pump its seems to be coming from where the alt. bracket is attached to the engine. Is this the front cover???. I called mazda and thats the only gasket they could find.

By the way, it is a 12a.
Thanks

it's the waterpump gasket, either the one between the waterpump housing and the engine, or the one between the waterpump housing and the waterpump. Make sure you replace the thermostat with a factory mazda thermostat when you replace those gaskets (you will need to replace both, it would be jank-*** not to).

There are two waterpump gaskets. One is relatively small, and has a piece in the middle (inlet and outlet) -- this is the gasket that goes between the pump and the block. The other is the gasket between the impeller part of the pump and the housing and is shaped like a 6.

Mazda dealers are ignorant in general, and this is multiplied twenty-fold when it comes to first gens. If they continue to not be able to discern between their *** and a hole in the ground I can look at part numbers for each and get back to you.

If the water pump is leaking, does that mean that it could be bad? Would it be a good idea to replace the water pump (just in case) while its out and in your hand? These are thoughts on the subject as mine drips a bit also.

This is probably the gasket:

IanS: If the pump is leaking, it's a good idea to replace it while it's out. If you've jiggled the waterpump housing at all, it's a good idea to replace the waterpump housing-to-block gasket that my second link is for. I used RTV for that seal when I replaced my pump--which was leaking out of its weep hole below the pulley like a sumbitch--with no leaks after 6 months or so. I would have used the gasket if I'd had time to wait for it, though.
