You have vacuum leaks. Not being able to bring the rpms down is a sure sign. Glad you got it started and running, now the fun begins.

Have more patience, and do more checking and trouble shooting. Have you gotten the idle down yet? What else have you done/tried? You need to provide more info on what you are/have done so far and the results. If you have not gotten the idle down yet, you need to find out why it's high and fix that before thinking about putting it in drive. Also mentioning that you have an auto would help. Idle for an auto should be 800 rpm when the tranny is in drive.

Since you changed out the carb, go back over all of the connections, vacuum lines, wiring plugs, nuts/bolts, etc.. If you have the air cleaner base off, there are 1 or 2 vacuum hoses that go to the base of the air cleaner that need to be plugged while it is off.

If you don't have a copy of the carb manual, there is a link in my sig line to the online one. It covers a bit more than the Haynes or FSM.

With all the vacuum leaks, tha carb cannot meter the correct amount of gas to keep running. You put it in gear, the load goes up, but the carb doesn't meter enough gas because of the compromised 'signal' at the carb to keep the engine from going lean and dying.

If you can't find someone to help turn the ignition key while you stay out of the car, then you need to get yourself a hand-held remote starter so you can be next to the carb itself and crank the engine up that way. You can throttle it by hand once it starts and then start spraying carb cleaner to try to figure out where the leaks are.

Conversely, you could take the 'shotgun' approach and simply just replace every hose you find with fresh tubing.
