Found a 1st Gen with 26K at work!

S, I'm at work, and went to another building about 2 miles away for a meeting. We're halfway thru this meeting, and as I am talking to the VP, what do I see throgh the window behind him but what appears to be a cherry condition FB driving down the street! Not the most common thing I see at 11:30 on a weekday in a technology office park during a cold Michigan October day. (The street was about 300 feet away, so my RexVision is pretty good).

So, 15 minutes later, I take off. I, of course, take the alternate route with the hope of spotting the Rex. Just as I apprach the exit of the park, sure enogh, there's the Rex with the driver getting in the car! I pull up and strike up a conversation with the guy.

Turns out he's only owned the car for 3 months, and has put 3000 miles on it. That makes a total of 26,000 original miles! An older couple owned it and as you can imagine, babied it. Car was pretty pristine. Original tires! It has a new exhaust, and one side was sprayed (it had been keyed). Owners twice had the pull the gas tank due to the gas going bad ... the car sat too much.

He let me drive it, and it was quite nice (slow, it's just a stock GSL 5 speed) but nice. Of course, he's thining about selling it -- knows nothing about RX-7s. Thinks $4000 is a fair price. I told him $2500 to $3500 is real for that range of miles.

So, if anyone is interested, let me know. I have his number...

P.S. Leather (pristine) and no glass roof.

That's amazing, a true collector's item. Now buy it and hotrod the snot out of it!

To all non-rust-belt forum members: it's very rare and special for us up here to find mint 7s. Mostly they're all rust-eaten parts cars...

I only paid $2500 for mine and the body is mint, so is the interior. It leaks oil like a son of a b*tch though.

Yeah, you definitely need to get that car, man , especially to keep it out of the hands of anyone who doesn't know jack about 7s.

I may buy this car.... I think he is willing to move tothe $3500 price. Yes, it'sa 12A (relatively slow). Hell, a Miata would kick it's ***. But man, it drives like a new car, and looks like one inside and out. It should, with only 26,000 barely-driven miles!

I should add that I drove a nice '96 Miata for $4000. Kills the GSL in performance.. and handling. The car feels so small though -- almost afraid to drive it on a busy street.

Also found a babied -SE with 135,000 well-cared-for miles and sharp aftermarket wheels for under $3000.

Tough choices!

I already have to rent garage space to store the first one! Two would prompt the spouse to have me sleeping in the car!

You put an exhaust on that and it kills any N/A miata on a straight with no problem. Spend another $1500 on suspension and you won't see the miata anywhere close behind you

abeomid, are you referring to the GSL? Will the exhaust kick it up that much? I've heard that the rotary really responds to headers, but wow!

yes a full exhaust (header/highflow cat/good muffler) should bring it up 20% easily.

I really like this -SE, even though it's out of state with 135K, very nice shape and 5 spoke wheels. But it's really hard to pass a rex with only 26K on it, esp'ly when it's only a mile away.

hey pjr: Time to set Priorities
1) Having a nice mint collector's 1st gen Rx-7?
2) Having a high-performance 1st gen Rx-7?

I'm squarely on peformance, my project is coming together as a Frankenstein of different cars and aftermarket parts.
My FB will eat n/a Miatas like M&Ms when it's done, but won't garner any concours trophies.

You are right! I guess I want it all, which probably isn't possible.

What I want is an -SE with only 30K miles, headers, and better air induction for $2500. Geez, what's wrong with that?
