Just curious as to where everyone's engines fall as regarding idle speed. I keep seeing 550-750. Are these engines basically stock or modded? My streetport 12A won't tolerate going below 850 RPM even with the basically stock Nikki. Right now idle is set at 950 RPM so that the load from the alternator doesn't drop me past the 850 limit when the Derale fan kicks in...
mine will idle ok at lower than 950, but i keep it that high so it wont go dead as fast, (if it starts acting up), i dont believe it will hurt the gas mpgs as few times that we are at idle,,,,,,,,,later

After long hours under the hood adjusting and testing, my 85 GSL idles comforably at ~700-750 RPM's
. Next stept is smoothing out the idels on the -SE

PS - The Manual and factory suggest an idle speed of 750 RPM's on a 12A, and 800 RPM's on a 13B, which makes me right on the money

Mine unfortunetly is sitting idle at 0 rpm too, that kinda happens when there isnt a motor. But when it did run it was like 1000, had a lil bad compression in the front rotor and that kept it runnin'
Hi.
Can someone please tell me if having a low idle speed is a problem? Can it damage the engine in any way?
I thought my engine was pretty normal, but I idle betweeen 300 and 400 which is a lot lower than anyone else on this thread. It's a standard 12A, with no add-ons.
Help?

I can get 500 with a smooth idle. My carb linkage is old and it can be anywhere from 500 to 1000. I've had it at 350-400 and it won't die thanks to the stock heavy flywheel.
A comment on idle speed, esp. for ported motors, the motor will "tell" you when it is happy. If the engine idle is not stable, it is too low. This assumes your tuning is correct, no bad parts. If you rev the motor and it doesn't settle right to it's idle speed and the mixture is correct, raise the idle speed alittle. Too low of an idle makes the motor labor and that makes for more wear. If the tach is working correctly a stock motor is best no lower than 750rpm. Relate it to riding a bike, too high a gear and your peddling is too slow and no longer smooth. Stock, 750-1000, Street port 800-1300, Bridgeport 1300-1800, P port 2000. With fuel inj, lower speeds can be obtained, but the stable idle is the key. Just my opinion..Rob
