Strange Carb Problems...?

Okay guys, I've done alot of searches, I've read alot, I just need a little confirmation of my theories....

I have a '85 12a GSL. Recently purchased with 120K miles. This is my second rx-7. Anyway...The car runs quite well for a 20 year old car, but, when I accelerate hard, like mash the pedal and pop the clutch from a stop light, the car goes about 5 feet, bogs down like crazy, then shoots right up again and moves great. Also, when I am driving and shifting gears like normal and I want to get on the throttle, The car seems to not reach its potential WOT. Sometimes I press the gas all the way down, then feel a click, and the car accelerates superbly, like its supposed to.

So my question is...Does this mean I need a new/rebuilt carborator? Is there something that is just tuned wierd? I have notice that when the choke is on, the car accelerates beautifully. When I mash the pedal, the car just GOES!

I thought It could be the Accelerator Pump, but the choke thing leads me to belive that it isnt. HOWEVER, I could be waaaay off the mark with that. Let me know what you guys think!

Thanks!
Breck

i would think the accelerator pump also. remember, with the choke on you're not getting enough air to bog as much. or it might have been converted to mechanical secondaries wrong?

Does sound like an accelerator pump problem. I'd check that first.

Accel pump. Maybe when choke is out, since it runs richer, you don't notice the lack of a healthy shot of fuel (AP). Just a theory. But the symptoms are those of a failing AP fo sho.
