Flywheel/clutch combo.... (help me spend $$)

alright, well my throwout bearing is currently toast so I gotte dig in there and fix that...

Now, as always the thought of "while I'm in there..." creeps into your head.. So here I am posing a question to you guys on suggesting how for me to spend more $$.

I don't drive the car for daily use much at all. I have a cute little wagon for that. But I do autocross it a fair amount, and we do our version of road racing/cruising every week. taking that into consideration, here are my ?s:

Flywheel: light steel or just buck up for the AL one? I know it's streeability is questioned, but that hasn't stopped me with anything else on my car, so why shoudl that?

Clutch. Still a stock port -SE engine, so I'm not putting down outrageous HP numbers or anything, so what's the best clutch for the purpose keeping $$ in mind.

Who's run what, and had what impressions so far with what they run?

TIA!

Eric

I run a clutch masters clutch,Its 70% over stock and was nice,BUT I need more,

DO NOT get organic materials,if you dont want a hard core clutch get kevlar lined,

Im gonan use the same Clutch Master Pressure plate, and get a 6 puck ceramic/bronzed dual friction clutch disc made.

I got a shop locally that makes clutches.

I should of just got a 2500 psi plate from them made,When I get my disc made im gonan get the pressure plate checked for PSI,I think its about 2000 psi..

If any of you 12a guys need a clutch disc,I got my clutch masters im selling it has about 2 months use,and been in the car since last Sept, till recent,I just pulled it out for the rebuild.

Beat me to it Matty How much hp is that clutch good for? I'll be going turbo on my 12a, hopefully soon, and I need it to be able to support at least 225rwhp.

Don't know about flywheels, lighter weight, balancing, life expectancy, too much hastle for me. I'm using a four puck ceramic disk with no springs and a race? pressure plate on my race car ('82 GS 12a) from Racing Beat I forget who actually makes it, but I like it. I'll go with the same setup except I'll get the plate with springs for my GSL (not an SE) when the time comes.

alrighty.. I'm back with this again, now that I have some $$...

gonna just go straight for the AL flywheel, but what about clutch?

I read mazdtrix site, and it sounds like the street/strip or street/race level is where I want to be. So that being said, go for theirs, or the centerforce dual friction?

Who sells clutchmasters for a good price?

Well, here's a comment anyway...I'm very interested to see how that Al flywheel works out. Those have always intrigued me and since you're running a stock port SE like myself our results would be similar. Please report back your findings. Thanks!

My car is faster still :-P .... but prolly not for long with the rate your going!!!!

I like your car better than mine...

I say get somthing that will hold up... dont get a strong *** clutch that will rip your drive line to shreds instead of burning the clutch....... just dont get an autozone clutch

Thanx, Laterz, Andrew

my experience with the Racing Beat Street/Race 4 Puck Sprung disc
and Racing Beat Street/Strip Heavy Duty Pressure Plate.

I managed to destroy 3rd gear in 2 trannies in a 6 month period.
and thats with only 135'ish rwhp

Needless to say on the 3rd tranny install the 4 puck came out and a stocker went in, works great, but can no longer chirp going into 5th

wtf auto zone..might as well go with the mazda stock. anyways flywheel AL is light i think 12lbs, so uve gotta rev it up to get up hills my friend has one like close to 2000rpm i had the steel 16lb one like 1500. These flywheels are a trip, no more slowing to a light in like 3rd the car wants to stall or may be it was cuz of the 4.44 that i had. emphasis on HAD... your choice ask RB what the Ups and downs of AL vs. Steel.

I think PeeJay figured out it was due to a weaker 3rd gear in the 84-85 trannies. but that was over a year ago, so my memory fails me sometimes.

the 12lb fly wheel problems are a myth. i have one in my 12turbo. it would idle just fine at 500rpm, granted not for long cause it would flood if i had the idle below 1000. i also had the street strip heavyduty disk and pressure plate. ive put over 10,000 miles of of 7 grand clutch dumps and i can still chirp 4th every once in a while. the pedal is slightly stiffer and the engaugement isnt that abrupt. for the money and a alllaround streetable clutch its sweet.
