Fluid changes

Please excue me if this information is noted/stickied elsewhere as I couldn't find it.

I have a 1985 GSL-SE with 132k on the clock. I bought it in August 1997 with 79,300 on the clock. The woman I bought the car from inherited it from her mother. There was no maintenance history for the vehicle other than a receipt for a new clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing that the daughter paid for in order to list the car for sale.

I replaced the differential oil about 37,500 miles ago (6 years). I have never replaced the transmission oil or axle oil.

I am considering replacing the differential gear oil again.

I note that the Haynes manual recommends replacing differential, transmission oil and axle oil every 30k.

I have owned two 1979 RX7s in the past and don't recall changing any tranny oil or axle oil. Both trannies were bullet proof.

Am I missing something?

How often do members generally replace these lubricants on their 1984/1985 RX7s?

Thanks

Bump

Can anyone shed any light on my query:

How often do you change:

1) differential gear oil

2) transmission gear oil

3) axle oil

I can see changing 1 and 2, but is 3 necessary.

I doubt 2 and 3 have ever been done on my car.

I use Redline 75-90 synth and change BOTH (axle and dif are one-in-the-same) oil every 4 yrs regardless of mileage - which in my case is about 2000/yr = every 8K miles. Oil is too cheap and trannies, etc too expensive to leave for decades at a shot between changes. $ well spent IMHO

I've replaced my dif and tranny every 2 years with Royal Purple. I don't drive the 7 allot (2,500 miles a year) but I change the oil every 3 months (Castrol GTX)

Thanks, I'm getting both the transmission fluid and differential fluid replaced today.

I don't think the tranny fluid has been replaced in going on 23 years, lol.

Same here, haha! I'm not sure how old my diff fluid was! Much like black jello when I got it out.

I do em both every year. Too often is better than not often enough. Shortly after purchasing my '85 GSL, I discovered that the tranny was running DRY. Neglect or abuse has caused a crack in the housing, and the several inches of the tail end were SHORN OFF. Never seen anything like it before, but it's made me pretty religious about checking and changing fluids.

I'm all for preventive maintenance. However with synthetic gear and diff oil replacing it as often as I am seeing posted here is IMHO an overkill.

I didn't opt for synthetic, just Castrol 80w90.

There were a few filings on the diff drain plug, but nothing to be concerned about.

I don't believe the transmission drain plug had ever removed as it was a biatch to get off. There were more filings than on the diff plug and the fluid was in worse shape. Not hard to imagine because it was probably in there since day 1.

I bought myself piece of mind if nothing else.

I believe the oil and radiator coolant were replaced on this vehicle religiously since day 1. It runs strong.

How many miles can one typically expect before the engine is toast?

That's like asking , "How long am I going to live". Can't be answered until the end.
But if your really interested in the topic. There is a thread that was done on the subject.

I attempted to change my diff fluid a few days ago... I take off the fill plug to first check the fluid level.. okay.. no problem.. but then I get my oil pan and attempt to take off the drain plug.. it dosent budge.. the only way I got it to turn is getting a breaker bar with a legnth of pipe on the end and prying with all my life.. it did end up unscrewing slightly.. but it broke my socket adapter square thing off into the plug, so I had to remove that.. managed to unscrew it slightly more.. but then I noticed the drain plug is beginning to get stripped and mangled, I dont want to destroy it so I stopped, now its in there half in half out and I cant move it.. no leaks..

I tried liquid wrench and whatnot, it mightve helped a little bit.. but not much..
I gotta get that black goo out of there!

Anyone have any tips on how to get that damn thing out?
Thanks

There are only a few ways to get the fluid out.
1). By removing the drain plug. Recommend you spray with Pb blaster. Better than liquid wrench.
2). Pull the axle out on one side and jack the car up so that the removed axle side is now on a down slope.
3). Pull back both of the axles and seperate the diff from the housing.
The last 2 I don't recommend unless absolutely necessary which I have never had to do.

Always spray PB on any of those under the carrage bolts before taking them off. Last thing you want is to strip anything
