Fluctuating oil pressure

I just bought a 1st gen RX7 a week ago and am really enjoying the car. I sold a Porsche 924 and bought the RX7 and have to admit I like the RX7 way better.

I am kind of scared to ask this but here goes. I have noticed that when the car is idling the oil pressure guage is about a quarter the way up and as the engine RPMs increase the oil pressure increases to about the halfway mark. Is it normal for the oil pressure to fluctuate like that? The car has less than 100k miles on it.

Also feel free to clean the contacts on your oil pressure sending unit. SOmetimes a dirty contact will make the oil pressure read lower than normal then fly up to the proper level as the pressure goes up.

Here, straight from the Factory Service Manual. Everyone should have one.

I personally dont trust the stock gauges. I dont trust anything older than me!!! I prefer mechanical gauges over electrical. much accurate.

According to that thumbnail attachment, the oil pressure is what is should be. That puts my mind at ease. Thanks.

question

I dont know how accurate my gauges are but I have great compression and in my oppinion a perfect running engine. At high-high rpms like above 4500 is it possible the have above a 100 psi of oil pressure?

Well, "that thumbnail" came out of the factory service manual, so its gonna be right. Your car is doing just fine.

Its possible if its been modified with a high pressure or high volume oil pump, but not likely as thats usually done with a rebuild. I would say the gauge or sender may be inaccurate.

Also wackyracer is correct. The stock gauge is WAY off. I installed an aftermarket gauge in my 7, and at idle, the stock gauge showed 30 PSI. My aftermarket mechanical gauge was reading 40 PSI. At a highway cruise (3000 RPM), my stock gauge showed a smidge under 60 PSI. The aftermarket gauge was reading about 65, almost 70 PSI.

Heres a link to the page on my CarDomain site that shows the gauge install: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/252363/17
