those mufflers are too loud for rotary, you should get a magnaflow muffler like directfreak's, they are pretty quiet

You might pay less initially, but how much are you going to save when it blows out in a month or two and you've got to replace it?

Go with RB quality, that way you've only gotta pay for it once. I've got header to straight pipe to RB muffler, and the damn thing is quiet!

directfreak have magnaflow mufflers and all the turbo guys in the turbo section use them too, magnaflow muffler are not glass pack, the are steel packed like RB and they last as long as the RB because they are stainless steel. but they are cheaper that RB

I've got a 40-series Flowmaster I'm using as a "presilencer" and I HATE it! Don't waste your money trying to patch together some home-made job like I did, just spend a few more bucks up front... it'll save you a headache later.

Flowmasters are designed to make piston engines sound big and throaghty (misspelled, I know) and the result on a rotary engine is an idle that sounds like a Cessna and a tin-can like metallic note throughout the rest of the rev range. On top of it all, because they're designed to resonate the sound like a big block Chevy, you end up with this annoying high-pitched tunning fork like noise at idle as well... that's my experience anyway. I can't wait to put a full RB setup on it like I should have done all along!

I had a straight-thru magnaflow 6" round, 18" long 2.5" pipe on my blue rx7 below for 1.5 year of street driving and did roughly 12 weekends of track time shifting @ 8800rpms. Never blew out. Never changed it's note. Sounded real good and revvvvvvvvved.

flowmasters sound like **** and don't muffle very well. tin can, exactly.

I tried a magnaflow on my SP 12A last week and it did not help quiet it any more then the very cheep Raptor that was on it before. the shop wanted 50 for the magnaflow or 25 for a new Raptor. I put the Raptor on. It is still way to loud for me. The magnaflow is about 100 at jegs so I am just going to save a bit more and get a RB one. The RB for a 79 is 230.

Dont know the model. I did not look at it that close.
It was an oval with center in and center out. 2.5 inch. We cut off the old Raptor and then hung the magnaflow in its place and listened to it. then another Raptor and then an OEM style one. None really helped. So I just put back on a new Cheep Raptor.

The engine is a SP with a weber 48 and RB header and no cat.

A oval center in and center out won't muffle much.

Oval mufflers are small as it is. It needs to be offset in/out for the exhaust to 'hit' the baffles and packing; and get quieter.

My 18" long does a better job. Just my $.02.

I wish I would have gone with the full racingbeat vs just a racingbeat header and center section.

the custom peice I had on the back that cost me over $280 to build blew out after a month and a half.

eddierotary are you crazy? That peice of **** isn't stainless steel it's aluminized steel so that think won't last long at all. Put on that and it's going to burn out.

and what you think most flowmasters, dynomax, cheap muffler and exhaust pipes are made off? and you can get the in SS too. what it get burned is the packing inside the muffler not the hole muffler just search on the website. here the part No for the SS magnaflow one. 642-14325

edit, BTW i have a dynomax muffler that is aluminized steel and i still havent seen melted yet but i know the packing is burned

get a magnaflow, dont get a dynomax, magnaflow last longer that dynomax because is steel wool packed, dynomax is fiberglass packed. mine lasted 3 years and now is loud because of the packing inside is burned. it doesnt sound like a rice burned , it have a nice deep sound but only lasted 3 years
