WV flooding, after new fuel pump?

85 gsl-se
new fuel pump, new o2 sensor ,new eng. temp sensor

Hi guys the saga continues I replaced the fuel pump and now if it doesn't start on the first sec. it floods. I checked spark its good.
and if it does start, a big smoke cloud of white comes out

Do I need to adjust the rich/lean mixture?I'm sure it was set up for the week fuel pump.
Did I introduce dirt into the fuel injectors?and can clean them?
I'm ordering new spark plugs what do you suggest?
thanks for your time

What does this big cloud of white smell like? Fuel/oil/coolant?

Was the fuel pump a stock replacement? Or aftermarket?

If the cloud smells like fuel, and the pump isn't too powerfull or something, then maybe the injectors are leaking.

Or, if it smells like coolant, you could have a bad seal. That means you have to rebuild the motor to replace the seal. Or, you can look in the archives for a method to fix it by using an addative called Alumaseal.

Has the car started at all since the new pump? If not, it's probably flooded from the last time you had it running. The de-flood procedure that works for my SE is to take the plugs out and clean them with some TB cleaner or carb cleaner and then blow them dry with compressed air. After this, take the "engine" fuse out or disable the EFI fusible link and crank her over until you do not see even the slightest mist of fuel coming out the plug holes. It is not unusual to have to crank her over for a minute or so in order to really get all the fuel out. Next, you should charge your battery or jump your battery with another vehicle for quick starting--trust me on this. Put your plugs back in, engine fuse or link back in, and she should start. I tried many times to shortcut this procedure, and it is not worth it. If your battery is not fully charged (like 13.5--14volts) the engine doesn't turn over quick enough and you end up flooding it again. Make sure the plugs are dry. Do not even have residual cleaner on the plugs when you put them in. That's why I blow them dry with air.

Hope this helps,

Mike

The EFI fusible link is the second link from the top. If you look real close at the fuse block (near driver's strut tower), you will see that each link is marked. The top one reads "ECU" or computer, I believe. The next one down is the fuel injection link.

If you want an 'advanced' techique to create a kill switch and also have a ready means to shut down the EFI pulses, you can just wire a switch into the fuseblock under the dash that's marked 'Engine Main' (IIRC). Put the switch on the fused side so that when the switch is off, no juice is carried to the fuel injectors. Doing so allows you to shut down fuel injectors, only, in the event that you need to de-flood via cranking (no plug removal), and/or you have a hot start situation where the engine will tend to flood. In this last case, you can crank the engine over a few times, flip the switch to on, and it will fire right up.

The added benefit is that if you place this switch in an obscure location somewhere, you can use it as a kill switch, since anyone attempting to start the car will only get cranking and no fuel.

Highly recommended if you ever park in a high crime area. HTH,

still floods

It floods every time now I'm thinking leaky injectors ,or could the catalitic converter be clogged? I was trying to start for a long time just pumping raw fuel into the exhaust.
Compression sounds real good when it rotates with no plugs
also when it is running it has a little random stumble up to 3 k....hummm
If I get a fuel pressure gauge what should it be ,going into the injectors at idol?

Fuel pressure should be about 28 psi at idle.

How many miles on the injectors/engine? They do occasionally need sent out for cleaning/calibration, on of the best things that can be done for FI engines. In the mean time, pour a can in of Seafoam when the fuel tank gets down to abut 1/8 full and run the engine through the full gear/rpm range with some hard driving and see if that helps. Might be wise to carry a spare 2 gallons of fuel with you.

Ok I took it to a mechanic ... He said it was a fuel control problem but he didn't have the cable hook up for his computer to read the problem.
So I'm going to take out the fuel injectors an have them cleaned
It does have 157,000 mi
