Float bowls not filling up. Searched for quite a while.

Spent the last three hours searching for answers to my questions, and got answers to all but one. My last problem is opposite of what is covered al ot (well, I saw a lot of posts about it in my searches). My bowls don't fill up. Now, let me tell you a little background.

I pulled my motor to do a clutch and clean up the engine and engine bay a lil bit. When I took the carb off, I kept it level, and was careful with it while moving it, and placed it on a level table. I didn't want anything to mess up with it, so I was careful. It worked great when it was in the car, I never adjusted anything on it, ever. Bought it in great working order. Well, when I put everything back together and was ready to start the car, I was getting a leak around the bowl vent solenoid. I just tightened it up a little bit, and that solved the problem. I attempted a start again, and it would just crank, and sometimes act like it really wanted to start, it was spinning faster than the starter could spin it, but not enought to run on its own. I went out and looked in the glass, and its empty, so I pushed on the accelorator pump a bit to see if I could get some fuel to squirt, nope. It sounded like a kid slupring an empty drink from a straw. So, I unhooked the fuel line, stuck it in a water bottle, turned the key, and watched the fuel come out. I have fuel to the carb, its just not getting into the bowls. I have the stock fuel lines on it, the return has that little metal think in the middle of hose, not sure what it is, but it was on the car when it was working, so I left it.

Oh, and yes I have gas in the car, 1/2 tank to be exact.

Anyone know why I could be having this problem?

check the screens around the banjo bolts above the float needles. ive pulled apart several carbs where these were crushed and full of debris. plus it only takes 30seconds to undo the bolts and check.

That little silver thing in the return line is the fpr and a oneway valve. That line should be hooked to the front fuel tube on the carb. You were much more carful with the carb than I usually am and I haven't had a similiar problem.

Sometimes the fuel bowls look empty, when they are really over filled past the top of the sight glass. The ap is feed from the rear bowl, how does that sight glass look? The needles may be stuck, try tapping on the banjo bolts at the end of the hard lines over each fuel bowl.

I tried the tapping trick on the banjos with a screwdriver handle, and once more with a wood mallet (not a hard hit, just a little more than i did with the screw driver)

The fuel lines are hooked up in the correct spots. Both glass sights look empty. I thought if they looked empty but fuel was too high, it would flood? It did flood on me the very 1st time I tried to start it. But that was the only time. The screens look fine, I thought about doing away with them and putting an inline filter between the carb and firewall. But I'd like to unstick my seat/needle if thats the proble.

Since the tapping trick didnt work, you guys think I'm going to have to pull off the air horn and take a look at them?

Ok, so when I take the airhorn off (never done it before) how do I identify a stuck needle? I've see the airhorn off of a few carbs, but never did so myself. I've read a bunch of threads on carb trouble, and some of Sterlings carb posts, so I know what the components are in the carb, I'm just not sure of HOW each piece functions or what it is/isn't supposed to do.

Link to carb manual is in sig line. When you pull the horn, slide out the pins and remove the floats, the needles will then come out. Check the tips of the needles and the seats, along with the shaft the needles ride in for any debris.

Fixed it. All I did was take the airhorn off, and move the floats up and down several times, bolted it back on, hooked everything back up and gave it a shot. No leaks, no flooding, and the gas was visible in the sight glass on both front and rear. Now its my timing thats keeping it from running right. Will be working on that tonight.
