meh..........it's cool and all but does it serve a purpose other than aesthetics? not gonna rip on him because i'm sure it will look good ( i always thought the DSM bump looked cool) and he is doing it the cheap way......but i wanted to know if he randomly decided to do it or if he had a purpose......

Hey doc, talk to the previous owner(s). They apparently dont know of a decent way to sand a car. I am pretty sure they used 60 grit at one time or another. This is why the primer is all blotchy.

Tennis, anyone
I'll tell you guys that on the 1st gens. it's really hard to pick/ fit any type of scoope , vents, cowl, and yes even a TII type scoope that looks good and adds to the over-all
plain, simple lines of the stock hood .But instead of an 'air-grab' on the hood, vent(s)
to let hot air out is always a good idea turbo or not.I'll also say that any modding. of the outside of the car should always have function. if your going to all the trouble of installing something why not have it do something at the same time. Alot of us 1st gen guys are real picky, i know i am thats why my hood is unchanged . I'll hand it to'ya to put something that ugly on. IMO

Keeping it Subtle
My objective with custom work is always to make it look like a factory job, not some backyard custom. This thread is amusing to me, because I recently was wandering through a local auto salvage, and there was a slightly damaged Talon hood, removed and just sitting there. This place, called PullAPart, sells everything cheap, and hoods are like $20, so I just picked it up and bought it. Took it home, cut out the hood bump and scrapped the rest. I don't know what I will use it for.
A few years ago I did the same thing with a 280Z hood, cut out the raised area and scrapped the rest, not knowing what I would use it for. When I did my RX-7 engine swap, the air cleaner was too high to fit under the hood, so I grafted on the part from the 280Z, exactly as Ian is doing. It is not quite in the center, but it is close and no one seems to notice. People who do not know RX-7s never even notice the hood scoop is not stock.
Photos of mine are at www.cardomain.com/ride/646433
The 3rd page shows some major sheet metal grafting I did a few years ago.

Stilettoman, looks good man. I hope mine looks NEAR as good as yours.
Doc, I know you were messing, but you would **** (can I still say that??) if you saw it. It looked smooth until you got the first layer or so of the paint off. Then, it got crazy. The sanding scratches went down to the original primer on some areas which is why it looks so messed up now. On the first pic, if you notice that almost the whole one side was REALLY sanded badly and I was forced to take it all the way to metal. My fenders are both like this and will be fixed in the future. Good thing I didnt use that body lol.
Mark, thanks for hatin' lol. Pretty much everything I have done body wise has been simply for look. I have the cowl, front and rear side markers, all emblems (minus front one - for future vent project), both antennas (PO had installed CB antenna on opposite side), and hatch latch keyhole shaved.
I would show pics of the protege wing (3000GT spoiler almost the correct color - most dont notice), but with the recent hard drive super crash I have lost most of my 7 and all of my protege pics. Attached is a side pic of my 7 when I first got done shooting primer. Yes, that is overspray on the hood and yes the headlight assy is missing in the pic but is on now.
EDIT: The mirrors are off in pics as they were the last thing I sprayed.

theres nothing on my hood except paint. I do have a vented headlight lid that directs 'fresh' air to the air canister(cleaner) it's a straight shot. BTW, guys. I vent the headlight lids for $ 40.00 dollors each shipped and un-painted and that includes a metal light lid too. interested ??? PM me. and your choice of vent.

Jay, come down here and get that window before monday or tuesday. I need the talon out of here. I dont have any updates yet, I have been working so no time. I will work on it and hopefully get it done tomorrow after work sometime. I work 6 pm to 6 am so the remaining time of the day is reserved for sleep. I will make sure I have updated pics posted in this thread.

Small update: Got quite a bit of work done to the hood and it is primered. I need to do a small bit of filling still as I have a few small waves as of yet. It is gonna look sweet I can tell. I wasnt too sure until I got it all 1 color. Pics coming tomorrow sometime. That is, tomorrow meaning today (monday the 1st).
Jay, call me man. I got a pretty big favor. I need you to find me a protege front driver window. I came home and my window was busted out. Little bastards... They tried to get the door open with a screwdriver as there are gouges in the top of the door frame. Also the door seal is fubarred. Good thing I had an alram. When they unlocked the doors and opened them, it went off and most likely scared them away. I am also glad I saw it before it rained today. Thats my "crappy life of Ian" update lol.

Bastards.
Tiny little cammeras are so, so very cheap these days. If I were to set up an alarm on my car it would include several. I would have them wired to capture a few shots as soon as the alarm goes off, or even at the slightest noise that the alarm would normally have set as too low a threshold to go off. (That way you'd be sure to get some good snaps of the perp[s in progress.)
I would also have it able to take "screen shots" at the push of a button, handy immediately after an accident, when pullecd over, or when riding through the town that you've been ticketed in and you need to capture a shot of the speed limit sign with the bush obstructing the view.
The technology is here and the solid state recording media is small and adequate enough (compact flash cards inexpensive even up to 2 GB) to even create a simple and inexpensive "screenshot clicker" from all four sides of your vehicle at .33 second intervals everytime you apply the brakes.
Imagine having such evidence in court!
You can't tell me this would be difficult. A technogeek could remove the rrecording eye of a simple digycam and add 3 or 4 more to it hardwired in.
Errrr, uhmmm...This is some good coffee!
