Fixed my car and drove a 1st gen RX-7 for the first time!
Well, I finally fixed the car and got it to run (with a 1984 tranny), new clutch, surfaced flywheel.
Cool little car!
Do you think I should change the oil right away to make sure the previous owned wasn't slacking? Anything else I need to check?
Opened up the carb, looks like it has a very fresh filter...
But something disgusted me today under a closer inspection - someone installed a "champion" oil filter! That must go!
Anyhow, pretty fast car, fun to corner. I like it, hopefully it will last

Well, the tranny was just dropped, so the tranny fluid is changed along with ?rear?.
I'm going to change the oil next weekend. Any suggestions? I know that everyone has their own theory about the brand and thickness, but what's the concensus? I use 10w-30 in my turbo impreza, trisynthetic. I doubt I want synthetic oil in the RX-7...

I've typed it before, Ill type it again...Only cause I feel nice, next time search, its there, I know, I typed it .
Manual transmission:
Lubricant Capacity: 2.0 liters (2.1 US quarts, 1.8 Imp. quarts)
Lubricant Type:
Above 18 degrees C (0 degrees F) - A.P.I. Service GL-4 or GL-5 SAE90
Below 18 degrees C (0 degrees F) - A.P.I. Service GL-4 or GL-5 SAE80W
Automatic Transmission:
Fluid Capacity: 7.5 Liters (7.9 US quarts, 6.6 Imp. quarts)
Fluid Type: M2C33F (Type F)
Rear Axle:
Lubricant Capacity:
Standard Diff: 1.2 liters (1.3 US quarts, 1.1 Imp quarts)
Limited Slip Diff: 1.6 liters (1.7 US quarts, 1.4 Imp quarts)
Lubricant Type:
Standard Diff:
Above 18 degrees C (0 degrees F) - A.P.I. Service GL-5 SAE90
Below 18 degrees C (0 degrees F) - A.P.I. Service GL-5 SAE80W
Limited Slip Diff: A.P.I. Service GL-5 SAE90 (Special Lubricant For Limited Slip Differentials)
As for the engine oil, 20W-50, non-synthetic. No synthetics because as I hear it (kind of a undecided/unproven reason), synthetics dont burn clean enough, and leave too much carbon (since the engines inject oil into the carb float bowls to burn in the gas). You make your own decisions, but I personally do not run synthetic, mainly duw to cost, but also because of this exact point.
Heres what I run:
Engine: Castrol 20W-50
Tranny: RedLine MT-90
Rear End: RedLine 75W-90

Personally, I run mineral (Penrite HPR30) because of the cost and the fact that I change it every 4000km's.

The engine has 92,000 original miles. I don't know why I am mentioning that, but my friend says thats pretty good for an almost 20 year old car...

How much marvel mystery do you put in it. And whats premix mean to be on the safe side?

He means (I assume) that he has removed the OMP (oil metering pump) and runs pre-mix (like a weed whacker) in the gas tank. A few people I have heard from are doing this. Its more precise control that way, I guess. I was thinking of it myself, Im just not sure Im ready to go that far yet .
