Fixed my AC! Questions...

I finally got around to fixing my AC. It blows cold, but could use a few more ounces of r134 to top off. Since this my first 1st gen with AC I have questions.

One problem I have now is when the AC is turned on it bogs the engine way down almost to the point of stalling. I have traced it down to what I believe is the cause. A bad AC solenoid. The solenoid is getting 12v, but the compensator valve on the carb isnt actuating. I pull the hose after the solenoid at the valve and no air is being sucked in. I pull the hose before the solenoid and a small amount of air is being sucked in. This leads me to believe the solenoid is bad. I put a vacuum hand pump on the valve and it opens the throttle to about 800 RPM steady. It idles between 750-800 RPM with no loads. It idles at about 600 RPM without manually actuating the valve with the AC going. When cruising it runs fine with the AC on, but tends to stall when you come to a stop.

Bad solenoid?

Looks like you diagnosed it.
I was using my solenoid and throttle opener but sometimes it it wouldn't work right. Possibly because I'm using the vacuum port that's intended for it, for the distributor. The throttle opener has some adjustment but it's finicky. I have the choke removed and the return spring disabled so I can use the choke **** as a throttle adjuster. I just set it at 1000 rpms with AC on. The compressor runs nearly constantly anyway.
In the FSM when adjusting idle with the throttle opener, the AC is turned on and the compressor clutch is disconnected.

The emissions rack is all stock and intact. I have a Racing Beat filter kit. Today after working on the AC I drilled holes in the base and swapped the idle compensation valve to it from a spare stock filter and installed a brass barb for the coast valve to plumb into. Maybe it will help with start up and coming to a stop. I also adjusted the dash pot some.

I also noticed that the vac lines where the idle compensation valve runs from where backwards. The one going to the carb and the one going to the valve were flipped. I called it a day so I havent started it to test yet.

I'm just stoked that it works. This is the second out of 8 RX7s that Ive owned that has working AC.
