first tow in the 7 today

well, today was fun.

On the way down to our boat with my dad, the alternator belt snapped. We were just about to get on the highway, and all of a sudden, my tach goes to 6000k and the all the lights got nuts So I pulled off into an empty parking lot because searching around for auto parts store wouldn't have been wise.(the belt also runs the water pump and fan). So about an hour and and a half later, AAA comes and tow's us to an auto zone like a mile away. If only we knew... So we bought the stuff to get it fixed and fixed it in the lot. Got some good comments about the car though.

So i got a question- yeah, the belt was old and probably should have been replaced with the alternator, but what about a dual belt alternator pully? What's the thing that people recommend when you remove the air pump? (because i took mine off) Is it something different?

Exact same thing happened to me, although unlike you I was not smart enough to call for a tow as I opted to drive it home instead. It could have gotten ugly but luckily everything turned out okay.

As for the dual alternator belt pulley, that's what I went with due to the fact that I had two belts snap in less than a week. We just wielded two shieves(sp*) together and used two belts. Like you I also got rid of my air pump and it wasn't a problem.

Luckily when I snapped my alt belt this spring I still had my air pump attached, so my water pump still had *some* belt. I limped it home like that, bought a dual-belt FD alt from Silverrotor, removed the air pump and haven't looked back

This is an old trick i learned a long time ago. but if you are close to a gas station you can buy nylon hose that them females wear and strech it around your pullies, tie in a knot and go on down the road. works well if you are not far from home or an auto parts place. Have had to use on a '79 delta 88 at one time or another. so instead of belts could keep a spare pair of hose in the car for just such an occation.

i'm pretty sure that you need it to pass emmisons. If you dont have a header/ exhaust and remove the airpump, I hear that the cats overheat or something.
