First post :)

Hiya people.

I am more than likely picking up myfirst 7 soon, an 83 SE thats in really decent shape for around 1000 bucks, maybe lower.

Anything specific I should ask about it? It supposedly drives well, good on the highway, the paint is really decent, it has 145k miles, and uses some oil, but sounds internally good other than maybe a seal.

Anyone? I'm excited.

if the previous owner told you it just needs an apex seal replaced, he is probably tring to screw you..

Replaceing an apex seal requires a rebuild..

145K on an original engine is getting pretty high too when you don't know how the previous owner has treated it... If you do buy it keep some cash around for an engine..

Just about any seal that needs to be replaced will require a tear-down of the engine. Didn't the GSL-SE models come out in '84, not '83? -Mike

That's what I thought, been doing research, I didn't mean it was a GSL-SE, he just posted Special Edition in the ad.

Been talking on email for a week or so.

We shall see. Regardless, i'm getting an FB soon.

Basically, he says you need to add some oil every week or so. How does that sound?

A healthy rotary should use a quart every ~1000 miles.. but it also depends on how you drive it..

Rotary's go through oil anyways, it get injected into the carb with an oil metering pumps to lube the rotors and seals, kind of like a two stroke.

Yeah, I know that much.

Anything else I should ask about?

I'd post pics, but they are in a damn zip file, too much hassle. It's in decent shape.

Get under the car and check for torn boots in the front suspension or bends, any oil leaks, etc.

Welcome to the world of the Rotary You will enjoy the car!

I plan on it.

If not this one, I have a good lead on an 84 GSL with only 99k miles in great shape.

Sounds like a Better car already. A GSL has several advantages over an 83 LE

4 Wheel Discs,
Limited Slip,
Power Windows
Newer, more modern interior
and...NEWER.

An 83 LE is just a GS with a different paint job and 14" mesh wheels.

Hmmm. Maybe you're right. I wanna drive both before I decide though.

The one thing that bothers me IS the interior.

But after reading up at Mazdatrix, i'm not too worried.

Wow, you aren't actually going to pay Mazdatrix' price on interior components, are you? Much cheaper to go pull decent pieces at the junkyard. Better than paying 80+ dollars for an ASH TRAY. Youch! -Mike

well it depends on how many miles he puts on it every week. if it's close to 500 miles or less, then that's not a good sign. personally, i think less than 800 miles is bad ... but i believe RB says 500 or less is rebuild territory.

yeah, i'd lean towards the '84 GSL myself, since you have a choice. as Directfreak stated earlier, you're starting with a better base car. how much is it?

yeah ... definitely post pics of both cars if you can.

BTW ... say, you really a Hendrix fan?
