First Gen Transmission

Hey guys,

Recentally the transmission in my GSL SE has started to make grinding noises. I am worried this will mark the end of it soon. I have the option to get a GSL transmission, would this work on my SE? Would the gears be the same? Would i notice a difference?

Thanks,
Nathan

im pretty sure the transmission bolts right in there...and i think the gears are gonna be a little shorter...if anything....your tranny might not even be bad, it just might be the throwout bearing

Someone mentioned to me that a member had made some sort of Franken transmission out of a second gen case, Miata gears and RX7 gears. Anyone know anything about that?

Forgot to add you owe me $60.00 for research time. LOL

The gsl tranny will bolt right in if it is 84/85, gearing difference is so slight you won't notice.

HOWEVER! A s5 low mileage tranny swap utilizing your gslse tail section is the ideal choice. You'll get a lower mileage unit plus the taller 5th gear will cut engine rpm by 500 at highway speeds. The 12a's lack the power to take advantage of this but the power and torque of the 13b SE is perfect!

It does not matter what year GSL it is! They all fit!

The S4 transmission from 87-88 has the tall 5th and the 89-91 S5 models without a LSD rear end have the same tall 5th. The LSD S5 equipped models do not have the taller 5th.

I replaced my GSL trans with an SE trans, aside from 5th being taller in the SE trans there's no noticeable difference. Makes for a nice improvement in highway cruising. 3000RPM at 120km/h vs 3500.

Its similar, but what I had heard was a first gen guy mixing and matching gears, syncros, and such from various Mazda transmissions to make his own racing gear set. It was really strange, I don't remember who it was supposed to be.

Yes, I have read that somewhere as well. I believe it was all Rx-7 parts with a few different Miata gears.

I wish I could get a super tall 5th for the highway in my SE. I haven't found a really tall gear in any Mazda, though, to swap.

the gearing between an 84-85 GSL and GSL-SE transmission is identical other than 5th gear, which is taller in the SE. the 12A trans is a direct bolt on unit to the 13B in the SE. the only external difference is that the SE transmission has a dual vented bellhousing.

alright, i poured some transmission fix into it and it seems to have helped a bunch. I may be able to get a few thousand more out of it yet. Thanks for the info.

I don't get it? The question has been answered. What is the purpose of saying the same thing that has already been said?

Their is only a difference in the 81-83 transmission gearing in gears 1-3, 4th gear is always the same . The 5th gear on the Se and the 81-83 models is almost identical, it is the 84-85 12a models that have a taller 5th.
