First gen LSD

I have an 84 gsl-se, I recently did a turbo II swap and got it runing good, then my LSD decides to die. I found a LSD at a local wrecker but it was on an 84/85 gsl. Does anyone know if it will work. What other types of swaps are avail without swapping the whole axle?

yes, the S3 (83-85) GSL rearend should bolt right in, im not sure if the brake hose going to the axle is different though. it would probably be easier/cheaper to swap an entire axle assembly rather than swaping pieces or rebuilding the SE axle . you could also probably use any S3 rearend, but i doubt you want single spin and drum brakes

Correction, all S3, 84/85 diffs interchange. Just what does 'dead; mean? You tore out the gearset or the lsd unit isn't working?

Well first it started to whine a bit, so I replaced the carrier bearings, now after about a month of driving it is whinning when you are on the gas and when you let off the gas and when you push in the clutch the sound goes away. I took it to a mechanic and he said that it would need to be replaced.

"when you let off the gas and when you push in the clutch the sound goes away"

so it's not the throwout bearing? Do you hear the whining from the back or towards the front of the car?

When that happened to me I found a really good shop ( old school lol) and had them rebuild my lsd oh and put a set of mazdatrix 4.444 gears in it.... 430 bucks at the shop though. But definetly make sure what your problem is before you spend alot of money.

I had this occur with me as well. I had a slight whine when I was on the gas and it would go away when I got off the throttle or hit the clutch. I blew the rear end at Road Atlanta. It started to whine really loud and then started to grind a little. I was scared it was going to lock up. When I dropped the oil out of the rear, it looked terrible.

If you push in the clutch and it goes away that most likly not your rearend. Cause when I broke my rearend it whined all the time no matter what you did. I would say its the throwout bearing, but hey I haven't heard the car so I dunno.

I have another car with an aftermarket mechanical lsd that makes noise when "unloaded" on decel and sometimes on turns like you describe, but I would change the diff gear oil to something like a Red Line 75W90 with the friction modifiers for the LSD. Possibly even try the 75W140.
