First Gen Flames?
my buddy just recently purchased a 2004 rx8
he learnt this little trick where he can shoot flames out his exhaust...
i was just wonderin if you can do that with a first gen
and if not what would i need to do it or is it even possible at all?

How does he do it? Seems it would be easier to shoot flames in a carbed car vs. FI. (Assuming they are NA.) So yea, what gummie said, get those cats out of the way and you should be able to no problem.

as far as techniques go...try getting in 3rd gear, punch it up to 6,000rpm and release the gas pedal.
as you're coasting(in-gear from 6,000) the car should begin the backfire. normally the first backfire(at 5k or so) produces the largest flames.
at least that's how it works with mine

I've seen old American Cars that inject fuel into the tail pipe and ignite it with some kind of spark system.
I remember seeing a module that did this and all you had to do was provide an old coil to make it work. I'll try and look it up for ya.

I just rev it to about 7k and let off in 2nd or 3rd gear and mine shoots out pretty big flames.Big enough to where I can hear and see them light up the street behind me.I always do it in front of the honda ricers that won't race but have the 200mph bodykit and wing!

A couple of things...
If the decelleration dashpot is removed this will help tremendously, and if your idle is set rich this will help, and if you happen to be running a bit lean high up it will help, too.
Mechanical secondaries will definitely do this very easily.
Reving high (especially @ lean) heats up the exhaust good n' hot.
Dropping of the pedal slams shut the throttle valves. but there is still enourmous vacuum acting on the carb for a second. This draws practically raw fuel right into the manifold with no additional air.
When this rich vapor is exposed to the combination of an extremely hot exhaust and the oxygen waiting at the end of the tunnel,
>BAM!<
That's my understanding of it, anyway.

THis makes me laugh to think about considering how much fuel costs right now. But I remember seeing a GSL-SE with headers, no cat and mazdatrix exhuast make small flashes when letting off the gas.
I do know if I crank up the fuel mix on my turbo setup, it makes 2ft flames in deceration according to my friend who was following me on the road. This is with a turbo and free flow exhuast.

I just found out this evening that my car shoots constant flames at idle whilst warming up; a nice blue color right under the passenger seat . Rev it up and let it fall and you get a nice orange flame and of course the obligatory explosions... then more constant blue fire.
