Fire...

I got a large streetported 12a. It's got no shortage of power and my power curve is strong and consistant. My question is why does my car not pop or backfire when I let off the gas/ or downshift. I have zero emmisions and a long primary exhaust running off an RB header. My buddies car pops all the time since he changed his exhaust and he has zero porting.

Im not saying it's a bad thing, becuase I'm sure lots of people would prefer not to backfire, but does anybody know why I cant shoot flames.

Ignition timing and air fuel ratio. You're probably running leaner than your friend. Good tuning!

No cats wil make you backfire, and yes running rich,I even heard that if you have an exhast leak it will make it do it.

I used to drive and then park and try to get the hell away from my car asap, with out making a scene,it used to sound liek a 12 gauge when it backfired

fire is fun at night, is it not...

I'm actually quite happy that since getting my new motor my car no longer sounds like a shotgun when I turn it off. I was just under the assumption that this was normal becuase of the nature of the motor. I was just wondering if I might be running to lean which is not a good thing. I would rather hear pops running rich than hear the sound of a hot dead motor from running way to lean.

I used to work at a place where our company car was an RX-4 wagon. I think it had a 13b. Our office was one door down in the same building as the Union Rescue Mission. We learned that if we revved the engine to about 5-6k, then shut the ignition off, you'd have 10-15 seconds (enough time for us to be innocently at our desks) before...BOOOOMM!
Those little old ladies who worked there crapped their depends more than once!!

It was also fun watching the wine-o's scatter like ants!

You would also have a engine with no oil still running at 2-3k

So do you guys just mean a shotgun like backfire? Just shooting some flame shouldnt be bad for the car, its just unburnt fuel being ignited....right? And what I'm talking about doesnt make any noise.

Right! I remember that thing locked up several times due to no oil. We'd put a couple of quarts in it, it'd fire right up.
It was a great car for a station wagon.

Why not make a scene? Scene's are fun... It's the only time I get called "sir", aside from when I'm pulled over.

Next time you're routinely at a shopping center or the mall or something, enter the parking lot at high speed, slide into a space using the e-brake, get out and run screaming. When it backfires, hit the ground, scurry between some other cars, wait a few secconds and run, screaming some more... Then right when you get to the entrance of the mall or store or whatever, Act like nothing happened.

Or put it in gear, and pull the e-brake,, as it rolls into a nice new BMW or lexus. or even down the parking lot.

4 foot flames

well my car puts out about 3-4foot flames whenever i let off the gas, but usually no backfire, all you hear is the unburned gas go....i have a pacesetter header, a mazdatrix silincer, a obx free flow muffler, and 2 and a quarter inch piping all the way thru...i also have a upgraded feul pump and a slightly tuned carbuerator....i think the free flow muffler may have the most to do with it tho....must be running rich but you got to figure rich is better than lean..

Why would you have no oil in the motor? Is the oil pump not mechanical?

Now THAT is funny.

an exhaust leak will produce nice loud neighbor waking backfires, and nice fireballs from high revs while driving!

great for scaring off tailgaters! nothing like a good face full of flames! they never get close again.

You guys should have heard and seen my friend in his TII on the way up to and back from a large MI meet. He had just had the motor rebuilt and streetported. And had not had time to tune the car perfict. So for a few hours each way I fallowed him on the expressway in my FB to make sure he made it. That was funny as hell, he would let off and a HUGE flame fallowed by the 12guage style backfire. Somone in a suv cut me off and go between us, he let off and almost tosted this guys bumper. He did toast his own bumper though.... heh. He has that fixed now.
