Question Finding a LSD?

I have searched through tons of post for the last few days and I think it has left me more confused. I have a 79 GS and I want to put in a LSD. Now I want to find one at a junkyard if possible. I have phoned a few places and they are not at all helpful. How can I tell which cars have a LSD and which do not. Are there any LSD's with drum brakes or did they all come with disk? Are there any markings on the diff itself? Which models came with them and what is a good why to tell them apart after they have been looted for parts? I am trying to find one pre 83 because it is my understanding that I will not need to change the drive shaft in this case. Thanks

Every first gen that has rear disc brakes comes with LSD. Good luck finding one in Vancouver though.

I have a rear end from an 82 GSL w/ disc brakes, so I thought that had the LSD too. Unless of course somebody had put a different end in before I grabbed it (a last donation from a junkyard rust victim). Suppose it could have been an 83 model year too though...wish I'd grabbed the door sticker to see what month it was made...

I'd part with it for $50, but it's probably no where near as nice or complete a set as what V8klr is offering. I'm in Jackson, MI (hour west of detroit).

yeah sorry guys your are just way to far away. I just want to know so that I know what to look for when hunting through wreckers.

Do all first gens with LSD's have disk brakes as well?

Do you have a "pick-a-part" or a "You-pullem" yard around or something like that. We have a couple in my area and I have found many a LSD at them. The last complete rear with discs cost $169 and jsut the third members runs $69. You just have to pull the parts yourself.

well everyone thinks like you,
they just dont wanna drive and im just too damn stubborn to ship this bag *** package

maybe if i make a crate in my spare time i might be willing to ship,
but that wont be for 3-4 weeks if i decide to go that route

I don't think all with disc brakes come with LSD...or there has been some major switching around, I have seen plenty of rear disc non LSD rears...

correct me if am wrong

People complained of the LSD clutch chatter so the dealers swapped them out.

Then there are the tinkerers who've put the LSD into a drum brake rear...

Then there are the LSD's with fried clutch packs...

The only way to know for sure for sure is to take it apart...

It's a good bet though that if the wheels spin the same direction, or of it takes a good ammount of torque to turn one wheel while the other is on the ground, that it is LSD... It's not as good a bet, but quite likely that if it's a disc rear, it's LSD too...

One LSD question though... I searched for "Miata Torsen LSD" as I want one form a 94+, but didn't come up with any results... As I recall, it's been said that the pumpkin will bolt into our axle with very little modification, it will fit our axle shaft splines, and our drive shaft yoke....

I just dont know how to tell which 94+ Miata has the torsen LSD... Is there a way to decode the VIN or is it a certain trim level, or will it be labeled?
