Finally running better

Took my 83' to a mechanic who specializes in first gen (used to be the primary mech at a Mazda dealership for 1st gens) after ALOT of carb problems and running issues and it is much gooder now. I'm a happy camper. Want to thank all the folks who I asked questions of back a couple of months ago. The mech now how is starting and running very well, but told me I could "tune it up" differently to pick up some acceleration, and I know nothing about this process. Wonder if anyone out there knows how to go from running good and clean with moderate take off to hauling better like I know it can? I'm talking simple tuning, not about add ons right now... that will come later!

You are not serious are you?

I am glad its running better, really not much is gonna get it running much quicker with out some bolt on mods, you could try and check the fuel filter, fuel pump, air cleaner and spark plugs/wires and that might make a slight difference.

"much gooder" ?

Open air filter intake setup. Making it forced air (scoop) helps.
Look into the 2nd Gen Leading coil upgrade. There's plenty of threads regarding this.
Change all your oil (engine, tranny, diff) to synthetic. I run Royal Purple throughout.

Also take a look through the FAQs. There's a link to upgrading a stock RX-7.

Yeah, I was serious. I dont know much about these cars/engines yet for performance improvements. But am working on it! I can keep it running and handle all the needs that are similar to standard block engine vehicles throughout. I appreciate all the suggestions and just want to make the car run as good as it can get while I also work on the MINOR body needs and the interior as I go along.

Actually, we were ribbing you about using "much gooder" in the sentence. That's what he was asking you about being serious. It's "much better", not "much gooder".

I am aware of that. I do have a proper education. The "much gooder" seemed appropriate for my lack of knowledge on the subject, and I thought it might be humorous. Guess I should refrain from such attempts in the future. But knowing me, I probably wont!!! At least I didnt ask where to put the fuel when I fill up. Ha!

Even tho you Texans don't get much of a winter down there, you still may want to put Winter Air into your tires. It'll give you better traction.

timing

advancing the ignition timing by 5 degrees or so can result in a little more responsiveness.
Probably very little difference in power, but may feel more "crisp".

It got down into the 30's today so the "Summer Air" I have in the tires WAS kinda slick! Ha! Might try the timing suggestion and see how it responds. If its not better I can always put it right back where it is now. I'll also look into the coil suggestion, open air intake (might look for a GOOD way to do that without having to open the hood up), and Royal Purple oil change. Recently changed the oil using Penzoil, and had a transmission service done with a flush and refill. It has a new radiator I put in and new hoses and belts I did at the same time. I replace both fuel filters with new, as are the plugs and wires... which are of high quality standards. New tires and complete brakes/brake lines all around. Anything that can improve what I have would be great. But I much admit, just the work I recently had done and did myself has made the car 100 times better than it was prior. I've been working hard at making it right since I bought it a short while back. It was in "fair" shape before mechanically, but would be in the high end of "good" now. A little fine tuning to make it "quicker" would be my only mechanical search right now until I can afford to put money into modifications on the engine... and the interior work to fix ragged out fabric seats and carpet, and a dash with a couple of small crack issues. The car is nice but as all lovers of their own cars, I want to make it better.

Other than the things already mentioned, your not going to get much more out of the engine. Start saving for a rebuild/port job, exhaust and intake. That's where your going to see the results. Unfortunatly that costs alot of money and time, but it's well worth it in the end.

I've been looking into an intake and exhaust system change with the Monza Exhaust system, unless you have warnings against and know of something better for the "general pricing". I cannot go high end, wouldnt think, to be honest but want to get "better" and help the cars performance.
