Finally painted my car
after owning this car for 3 years now, i finally busted my butt the last few weeks to get it ready. the interior was totally gutted except for the bare dash, and i pulled off everything i could get my hands on except the windshield and the weatherstripping for the hatch and sunroof because both are still in good shape. i only did from the top of the firewall back because i still have a lot of work to do up front and don't want to hurt it in the process. i can finish the rest in pieces later on.
started about 6:30pm getting things ready. rolled the car outside, blew out the garage, blew out the car while outside, laid out some plastic on the floor and rolled the car back in. left the garage open about 3ft and had a box fan blowing air out and sealed the rest of the opening with plastic. i had painted the door jams and window frames the day before, and already had everything masked off ready to go.
1st coat of paint had tons of fish eyes in random spots. for some reason i had thought you could use mineral spirits instead of a wax and grease remover to wipe it down beforehand, but apparently not! a quick trip to the parts store, some sanding and i was back on track around 10pm or so. thanks to a bunch of mt dew, i finally got done around 1:30am. the color is lunar mist metallic-i just pulled the paint code off my truck. should look good with the blacked out trim and tinted windows.
started colorsanding today, looking good just very, very slow going. some small little dings and stuff showed up, but nothing i was willing to go back and fix at this point. for a ghetto garage paintjob, i'm happy with it. now i understand why people charge so much for a good paint job!
back when i first got it. pretty sure it was passed around by a few kids who didn't know how to anything but spray primer on stuff and loosen bolts.
primered and ready to go.
paint is done, ready for clear
the next day
trim and other little pieces

looks good
I paint cars on the side, and yes if you want a really good paint job it takes a lot of time.
Right now im wet sanding the primer. I'm hoping to paint it this week

That is done extraordinarily well for a garage job. What sprayer where you using? I airbrush for a hobby, but I've never really gotten into the "big" (full body) paint jobs.

i just sanded it with 220, primer,, wet 400, paint, clear. i thought about getting it powdercoated, but it would just be more money i didn't want to spend. i think it'll be fairly durable.
the sprayer is made by vapor, got it at northern for like $60. i thought about getting a good one, but figured that without a real spray booth the gun wouldn't be the limiting factor. my compressor is a husky 30gal, 1.8hp with water filter and particulate filter.
if you've had luck with small stuff before i'd give it a shot. if anything, get an old hood and a see play around. actually spraying isn't that big of a deal, it's getting every little ding and crease out that's the killer. and being careful not to kick up dust or drag the air hose across the car. i've painted my roadrace bikes before, but it never was a big deal because i knew i'd just crash and tear it up anyway. |
