Finally, a DIFFERENT running problem!

Hey Guys,

So today I replaced all the vacuum hoses, put the carburetor on using sealant on either side of the spacer/gasket, and started it up. Here's what happened:

The car started fine even without the choke, but it immediately revved to 4k rpm. So I'm like "oh, cool, so now all I have to do is adjust the idle speed screw and I'm set!"... no such luck. I adjusted the screw all the way out, and all the way in, in half-turn incriments, and there was no big change in the revs... When I screwed it *in* from about halfway, the revs climbed a bit from 4k to 4.5k... but when I screwed it all the way out, still steady at 4.5k.

I tried adjusting the other screw too, to no avail. I know there are no vacuum leaks left, and I sealed the shutter flap open by using the old siezed valve and some silicon.

What the hell is going on? Any suggestions on what to check? I'm all out of ideas. Before it would start with the choke and only rev to 3k, but without the choke it would die, now all it does is run high with no apparent hope of bringing it down!

Oh, the only thing that is different about the vacuum hose I used is the fact that it had a slightly smaller internal diameter... So I had to use a bit of a push to get them on their connectors. I thought "all the better, it's so tight, it'll seal well".

Help me guys, I'm stumped. I know the carb's good, or at least, it was good when Andy last had it on his car.

And just out of curiosity, what are the symptoms of incorrect float adjustment? I don't think it's that, I just wanna know.

There's two possibilities. Either there's a vacuum leak or the throttle plates are stuck open. Maybe the linkage is binding somehow?

I don't think it's a vacuum leak. Actually I'm gonna go so far as to say it DEFINITELY IS NOT a vacuum leak. I had one of those, and I just spent all of today doing absolutely everything in my power to seal every single source of one. The problem with the vacuum leak was that it would only start with the clutch, and rev high, but if I let it rev low it would sputter and die...

About the linkage... hmm.... Well the gas pedal has the proper amount of foot-resistance, and when you press the pedal, you can see gas squirt in to the barrels. I know I hooked it to the right one, or at least I'm pretty damned sure I hooked it to the right one (closest rail to driver's side that isn't hot-start).

I don't know what else to say, or how I can check the throttle plates... Any suggestions? I dont' think you can see them from looking down the carb can ya?

hey man..... stuck open secondaries is what i would guess..... look down the carb and see what barrels are shoving gas into the motor............ undo the gas cable and see what happens.......

If I can get down there with needle nose pliers, I'll undo the gas cable and see what happens... I hope it isn't stuck-open secondaries, because I silicon'd the carb to the spacer, to the manifold, so it's gonna be a bit of a bitch to take off.. but then again, that's the exact reason I used silicon instead of "gasket maker"... so that I could take the carb off again if I needed to.

Thanks, I'll get aim sometime tomorrow.. I don't tend to keep AOL related stuff on here, but I'll reconsider that if it means getting some advice!

Anyone else wanna take a stab at it? I'm open to anything!!

Check the simple stuff first.
Is the throttle cable stuck in the open position? To tight?

Dunno if it's too tight... and not sure how to tell, but methinks that since I can do an entire to-the-floor motion, it's not too tight... and because it *does* have resistance when I do so, it's probably not stuck... probably.

I'm gonna try and find a way to check the secondaries... but at this point I'm so close to saying ****-it and taking it to a shop it's not funny.
