Finally! The culprit is caught!

Well, you have probably seen my recent A/C questions lately... And I have found the problem--a leak in the discharge hose. Now, I have the compressor (in an 85 GS) that has the stupid one attachment thing--where the suction and discharge hoses are attached together to a single piece that is bolted to the compressor. Where can I find this hose for a decent price? Also, I hear that it is rather difficult and time consuming to replace this hose--is this true? (I know that the system has to be drawn to a vaccum)

I would love to rip it out but I live down south and it is very hot and humid, plus I drive this rex 200+ miles in a week. My other rex is my race car

Thanks,
FS

hose, show me a picture of the hose, and i'll see if the local boneyard has it.

I know how you feel FS. I wish I still had the A/C on mine. Southern summers plus a glass roof makes for a pretty fast sauna.
But hey, wanna go fast you gotta sacrifice something. Mine's water weight.

The hose should not be at all difficult to replace. As for finding it where it isn't beaten up, dry rotten, or otherwise unusable... For a good price... Good freakin luck.

Perhaps bring the fitting at the end to a custom hose place and see what they can do for ya.

Remember new O-Rings on the fittings where it mates to the compressor... Neoprene... Neapthonal... Neoxyasomething something... I dunno... It's something like that. Special high strength rubber for A/C systems. Starts with an Ne... or has a very distinct Ne sound it it.

LoL, thanks for feeling my pain guys

I think I'll try to search around some more... My newly acquired rex has a busted hose too (just found out this morning). of course, this rex has been sitting in someone's lawn for over 3 years. I'll see about custom hose places--that's a good idea, pele!

mark: I'll PM a pic if i'm really desperate--thanks

My 85 wrecked parts car in the driveway still has all those hoses. I don't know if they are useable though.

Cost me about $70 to get that hose remade (with new barrier hose) at the local AC shop in Renton WA.

All together I spent about $200 for a new drier and hoses last august for my '82.

Take your current hose, to a local AC shop and they should be able to cut the crimps, and put new hose and crimps on your old ends, as well as supply new O Rings.

I agree with RoyFifo:

I had a leak in my discharge side hose last year, and i just took the assembly out of the car, called around 'til I found a place that could do a custom fabrication of a new hose, and took it to them; total cost, $40. To remove the hose, if you don't know, undo the one fitting at the firewall, the bolt at the compressor, and the fitting on the drier underneath the upper plate fot the radiator shroud (easily accessible from the top of the engine bay). Good luck.

By the way, if you live in GA, its definitely worth getting the system refilled with R-12, instead of converting to R-134a, because it will be considerably cooler without having to replace major parts of the A/C system.

Found it

Go to the site I listed above, go to air conditioning parts scroll to the very bottom till you see rx-7 click and click on the year of your car. I think what you are looking for is the 85 mazda rx-7 hose assembly (suction and discharge.

Nah. You gotta be licensed to get a hold of that.

The EPA is all abou the Ozone layer... Ooo waaah the ozone layer... Meh. I dont wanna move to Maui Beach... Bring it here. Also R-12 is federally regulated, so the prices are through the roof. Depends on the supplier though.

Known (to me) substitutes for R-12:

Butane (Dangerous for obvious reasons. Darwin awards anyone?)

Freeze-12 (Sold in a blue can. If you can get a hold of it, use it. Signifigantly cheaper and similar in effectiveness to R-12.)

The compressor on that car had no belt, so I assume the compressor is bad. If the compressor is bad, then the fcharge/oil leaked out allowing the compressor to wear. I can remove the hose you want and visually inspect it, but I have no idea how to check it for leaks. The 'spray paint' is just some stuff I added in paint SHop Pro to make the hoses the only part visable - for identification. If you can take your fitting and have a new hose attached for $40, that sounds like the best option since this hose may work, but then you gamble on wasted shipping charges. If you want, I can remove the hose- up to you.

(sorry I didn't post yesterday, but EVERY TIME I tried looking at this forum, my browser would freeze up from the prolonged wait. )
