Fiberglass/carbon hoods!!!
Ok, finally have the first hood out of the mold!!! I am very happy with it other than one thing, it is very thin!!! It will work perfect for racing.....not street! The hood weighs 9lbs. You can mount it on the factory hinges but you will have to use pins in the corners to latch it. The hood has bracing on the under side of it but the edges are very thin on this first unit. We used 2 layers of cloth...the next glass unit will have 4 layers and should take car of the too thin problem for street cars. With 4 layers the hood should still only come in at around 12-15lbs. Looks like I will sell the glass one for around $225-250. I am not really comfortable selling this yet until I get one perfected for street use. We are also working on the carbon unit......$350 range??? I will keep you all updated. Please respond with questions and concerns!
Oh yah, some one PMed me about the carbon fiber one having a UV protector in it......it wont.....you will need to have a paint guy clear coat it if you are concerned about the UV protection.

Hey!! Looking good!! Can't wait for the CF ones...I really like the look of those on street cars, especially the white cars (what do ya know, my cars white ). Let us all know when the CF ones are done, I may be VERY interested in one because by the time you get them made, I may have the funds in order . Good work though, cant wait to see the rest of them and follow your progress!

Glad to see interest!! It will take some time on getting the CF done....I am finding out why no one is doing this, it is very expensive and time consuming!!!!!! Remember, I am also working on the head light lids, the valance between the lids, and now looking at some fenders and rear quarters. Everything will be available in glass or CF except the fenders and quarters....only in glass.
PM me with yalls email address so I can save them and keep everyone updated. I will also post on here every step.

I would say crate and styrofoam honestly. I dont have much expericane with shipping stuff, but thats just what comes to mind. Build little boxes out of wood and put them in there...It would provide the "best" protection due to the external "shell". thats just my opinion though...

Edit: it would be expensive, but I think that if you wanted your hood in one piece, it may be worth it to you .

Extra cooling, between the headlamps, to get to
the radiator, intercooler, etc.
Small scoops and Naca Ducts are good too.

too ship it in a crate.... is good, but I would think the styrofoam would wiggle and if it sat in one spot, it would eventually hit the crate... so I was thinking air bags, like when you order a flywheel from sumit..... they have plastic air bags that could hold it in place, then put some peanuts around it and it should be fine.... OR you could make lil' corners outa styrofoam... hehehe..... dunno....

Direct,
Thanks for all of the pics!!! I needed those. I think we can work something in the valance between the lights, that looks good. I was thinking of cutting out a TII scoop and using that for the mold(for a hood scoop)??
Andrew,
I was thinking of trying to find one of those sprayfoam setups that packaging guys use. They first bag the part, then spray the foam in??

i believe directfreak has way too much fun posting pics.
here is my hood vent http://www2.apex.net/users/patryn/79rx7.htm. it could be a bit bigger but i don't think you'll gain a whole lot. i'll also post up some new pics i took. never mind the rust. its my race hood and i just haven't spent any $$ on touchup paint.
