Few questions for other Aussies
Hi,
As you know we didn't get the gsl-se (Why mazda?). I have a little more money and am now ready to buy a 2nd car (My 1st rx-7 isn't in the best nic) and I would love to get another rx-7 but found the 12a a little gutless, the main fault in a great car. I would love to get one with a carbie 13b. I was wondering how much have other guys in Australia payed to do a 13b swap (Wouldn't have time to do it myself between uni and rowing so it would have to be done by a mechanic). Also how much is a good price on a s2 or 3 already fitted with one (car in good condition), I went to look at a s2 13b but the owner was asking 8 grand NN which seemed too much.

i suggest you go to either the Dalton or Dyson websites for detailed price information
A rebuilt and installed ported 13bt will cost you arond $6,000, a series 4 stock rebuilt13b around $4500 as a rough indication. You could get it cheaper if you shop around.
$8000 could be a reasonable price for a car in good condtion, the transplant is not cheap and most people upgrade otherthings such as suspension at the same time. There goes another $1000. As a start look at sites such as Selectmazda as they usually have some on offer. Even try www. carpoint.com.au as it has a range of dealer offered Gen1s listed.

really, I have been told that 8 grand is way too much. The other option I was thinking of was to buy an imaculate one with a 12a and put on a good exaust, carbie and street port it. How much would I expect to pay for those mods?

If you find a car with the conversion already done, you'll save a lot of money. I got my S2 with 13BT for $7k, engineered in reasonable condition body and interior wise. The money you save on the conversion can be put into fixing up the little things (there are always little things).

to fit a carbed 13b to a 1st gen.... need engine, appropriate sump and engine plate/mount (to move mount point 2cm forwards). Use the original clutch and flywheel plus dizzy.
You can get an engine for between $500 and $3,000. Say another $200 for the 2 parts - then its all time and labour. If you could do it yourself then you could get out of it for $800.
That said.... a few weeks back there was a (really really ) rough s1 import selling with a 13b six port for about $750....
As said, a better choice might be to check www.rotorworx.com.au , dysons and daltons and see their drive in drive out prices for 12a (wouldn't bother) or 13bT (woo-hoo) conversions.

putting 13b into first gen is a piece of ****, just need to swap the front covers from the 12a, get a 13b sump and modify ur exhaust if u dont wanna put a new one on, check out sarotors.org and go to teh forums, everybodys willing to help out with stuff if needed
doing it urself will save big $, but workshops can do it for ya for a bit under a grand, depending on who u go too

The fundamental question is whether you want someone's old 13b or getting a rebuild with a warranty.
The cost problem with porting is its cheap if the engine is already stripped down, its only worthwhile if you are having a rebuild in the first place.
My s3 12a has bolt on modifications, being a good exhaust system, modified nikki carb and K&N filter with the air pump deleted. It produces about 125rwhp being about 5% more than a 13B while still returning 8-9l per 100km. On a tight budget you could get done for well under $1000.
When the engine is due for a rebuild then I will get it ported with emphasis on bottom end torque, that should add another 40bhp.
I visit SA every 2-3 weeks from Canberra. From Pinnaro to Adelade is about 250km. An extra 40hp will save me 12-15 seconds in 2 1/4 hours driving. At a $120 an hour professional fee thats saving me 50 cents in time!

Had a look at the Rotorworx 13bt package for $6800, it sounds a good deal if you are going to keep the car several years. Buying a good s3 12a and doing a transplant will put you up around the $13,000 budget but at least you know what you are getting. Their package would certainly give you a reliable vehicle.
