Question Trans rebuild

This weekend my dad and I dropped the tranny on our gsl-se. One of the bearings was going out. Has anyone had to do this? I am wondering where to get the bearings and how much they cost. The syncros seem fine, I'll know for sure when I split the case tomarrow, but just in case they're not where can I get them as well. I checked with mazdatrix but they only sell whole tranny's. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Have you tried calling up Mazda directly? Also maybe mazdacomp has them?

I do know that a new rebuilt tranny will cost you around 450-550... which is a bit steep.

Back in the day with my old Triumph TR6, I would get the kits from a local transmission rebuild shop. He’d order up a kit for my car then just sell me the kit.

Haven’t had the transmission out of the P.O.S. Racer yet, but it is on my list of to do’s.

I had mine rebuilt about a year ago. Mine siesed up and broke the entire bearing braket from the trans when I was going around a corner. I took it to a trans shop and they got a good trans from a junk yard and they put in new bearing from there parts dealer. I think mazdatrix has the bearings too.

How hard is it to replace synchros and bearings? I'd like to do this sometime as I have 175K miles on my tranny and it was making bearing noises not too long ago.

Well it turns out this won't be that hard. The bearings in the rx7 5spd are very common and used in many cars. The complete bearing set is $129, the bearings with all new syncros is $207. Once you get the tranny out and apart you need to find a shop with a bearing press. Most shops will have one or know someone who does. Simply have them press out the old bearings ( at which point all the gears and syncros simply slide off the shafts ) and slide on the new syncros and press on the new bearings. Then take it home and put it back together. The shop I'm going to is charging me $60 bucks for the labor. A complete tranny rebuild for $270 bucks is not bad if you ask me.

NOT AT ALL! That is a good price, just make sure to take your time and set all the tollerances and what not correctly and use the right tools and it will be $270 well spent.

I still have a good trans from my 85 GSL. It is now almost free if you come and pick it up near Milwaukee.

I know this post is really old, but where can I order the kit with the syncros for 200 bucks? And does someone have a how-to on rebuilding the tranny? I have never rebuilt one and my second gear syncro is shot.

What do I do if I am not a racer? Also, has anyone done this? Is it easy? How long did it take, like is it a one day project?

Thanks,
Chris

Find out from rex where he got his stuff. Not a one day project. You need some special tools too. Look in the shop manual and read the procedure.
