Question A Few Questions

Wanted to see if anyone could help, few questions on my stock 84 gsl 12A.

First, when I go through 3rd and 4th gear slow she seems to drive fine. However if I push the gas hard she loses power.

Second, the power windows seem to be slow when it gets cool outside, but when its warm they work fine.

Finally, found three wires under the shifter boot. Ones red, ones black, and a white adapter that has a green, red, black, and orange wire.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kirk

Check your timing. Does it happen in any other gears?

My pw do the same thing and I just live with it. I took the door panels off and greased everything that I thought needed to be... that seemed to help a little. I think the motors just hate cold weather just like the rest of us.

And the wires....I'll go and check my car and try to find out what they are.

two things cause the loss of power.
first is starving for fuel.
check your float levels and replace you fuel filter. if that doesnt work check to see is pump is putting out full capacity
the other thing is that your secondaries might not be opening. check to see if the are binding or just not opening.

Why would it only be happening in 3rd and 4th, and not 1st and 2nd?

If the secondaries open in first and second, then they should work for 3rd and 4th, right? The engine uses fuel per RPM, it doesn't matter what gear you're in. It shouldn't use more fuel in 3rd or 4th than in 1st or 2nd.
Doesn't sound like a timimg problem. Got me....

Anybody else have anything?

Hey, Buckaroo...

Forget the wires under the boot...They're for automatic trans cars, not yours...

Yeah, everyone's PW's slow down given the cool weather. Remember we're talkin' older cars here, and the PW's were never the strong suit on Seven's anyway...

My Carb car isn't the strongest in 3rd, or 4th either....Gotta do some studying and some experimentation...

Denny, from the 'ol corncrib....

there is more strain on the motor in 3rd and 4th gear and therefore takes quite a bit more gas to make an engine do 3k rpms in 4th gear than 2nd gear. It is all in the load. It is the same thing that happens when you shift an automatic into gear. Even though the throttle is in the same place, letting in the same cfm of fuel / air. the rpms drop from the load increasing. Now one of the beautiful things about carbs is that the wider open the throttle is, the less problems can occur. Vacuum in the manifold is severly dimenished, and therefor vacuum leaks tend to stop causing problems. Now your carb has no earthly clue what gear you are in, all it knows is that some insane bastard 3 foot away want even MORE fuel and air mixed at 13 parts air 1 part fuel. Now unless your air filter is clogged (go check) there is an un-ending supply of Oxygen the only thing that may have a problem keeping up is the fuel entering in the venturies. only two things can cause this, one is debris and the other is low fuel pump delivery. Debris can be blocking fuel flow either in the fuel filter, in the jets or in the venturies. The venturies is unlikely but can be fixed with carb cleaner. Clogged jets require a rebuil and the fuel filter.... Now your engine needs air, fuel, compression and spark. If the engine will redline in any gear then your spark is fine, timing will slightly affect performance but in all gears. I strongly dont believe there is anything wrong with your timing. start you engine and rev it up mid way a couple of times while watching the float level on your carb. if it drops then you are not getting enough fuel to your bowl and you should replace your fuel filter. You should really replace it anyway, it never hurts.

Sorry its so long, just wanted you to see the logic behind what I was saying.
