FB running a little on the rough side...new to RX-7's

Alright, so I'm new the forum and new to the car. I just picked up an FB 1983 with the stock 12a motor in it. I bought it knowing the engine has some issues, I just dont know where to start to resolve the issues.

As far as I know everything is still stock in the car and it runs, which is cool because I got it for $475. Its extremely slow to start, underpowered or something. It fires up right away when I turn it on and it runs with no over heating issues or anything like that. I cant get it past 80 and it takes forever to get there. The guy that I got it from said he was sitting at a light when whatever happened, happened. Just all of a sudden there was a very noticeable power loss. I drove it back to my home which was a good hour and a half drive with no issues other then lack of power. The previous owner also said he thinks gas is getting into one of the cylinders. So thats the issue I'm looking at.

Any help would be appreciated, I just don't know where to start. I'm relatively inexperienced with cars and this is gonna be my first project car. So be gentle! Thanks!

Zac

Offhand guess is the PO may have dropped an apex seal. Sudden loss of power and running rough is a telltale. First thing to do is perform a compression test.

Since you can't see signatures yet, I've cut and pasted mine. Download the FSM, carb manual, etc. and start reading.

Welcome to the foum.

Download YOUR copy of the FSM Then read it.

I won't tell you again.

Could be secondaries. Check out the "teeter totter" problem with the SEARCH function. Lots of people have had that problem and it only takes a few minutes under the hood to fix with no $$$ outlay.

Otherwise, could be plugs or dist cap or dist rotor. Could be fuel blockage at filter, etc.

Could be catalytic converter.

How many miles on car?

Do you have pictures?

perform a compression test first and foremost. the secondaires are vacuum controlled and use a solenoid. their operation is covered in the fsm. as trochoid suggested, download the fsm from his sig: http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/manuals.html

that my friend is most definitely not it alright, you should start with the faqs page, and the owners manual that trochoid posted. as far as your issues go, check your fuel filter make sure it's not clogged. it could also be your cat. if that's not it, check compression like trochoid said. start with the simple ones first, then if those are not it, you can move towards the hardest ones one by one.

Once you have downloaded the carb manual, study the diagram on page 44 of the PDF file. It shows the how the sub return assembly, (teeter totter), is supposed to be configured.

Report back your findings in regard to the sub-return and compression test. If the rod has dislodged itelf from the saddle, it can be popped back into place without having to make any adjustments.

Teeter totter problem is quite common. Look here:

You can get a good match for color from paintscratch.com.

Will cost a fortune from a Mazda dealer, but pennies cheap from a Pick n Pull or from somebody who's parting out a car. Look in the classifieds and/or put a "WTB" in the classifieds.

Find someone nearby with a carbed 12A and get over there to take some pics with your digital camera and study his linkages.

Yep, you have a few parts missing. Check your regional forum. Someone nearby should have a spare carb for parts and as tight as the rotary community is, you might find someone who will come over and provide you with the parts and repair for free. Fwiw, that part didn't fall off on it's own.
