FB rally car
Hey everyone, has anyone here had any experience rallying an FB? I know it's been done but have any of you done it? If so, what mods would be done etc to make a good rally car? Also wasn't there a 4wd FB that a few rally teams used back when our cars were new? The reasons I ask is because I just got a parts car and am trying to think of what I could do with it after I take the things I want off of it. I might decide to restore it actually, but I was just curious. TIA

actually that was what i planned on doing with mine except i fell in love with one that had a body kit etc. you will need: skidplate for the front section (custom fabricated) minimum, fud flaps, at least a bolt in cage (rally cars like to go shiny side down), good lights, metal guard for the dif, the car will need to be raised as stock height is too low and with the original springs really too low, good tight shocks, stay with rubber bushings and you'll bend less expensive metal, nothing loose in the interior, steering is going to be a bitch with the slow ratio and no power, helmet, etc.
i did this for 4yrs with my camry. its engine brace ran longitudinal so i didn't fully require a skidplate, should have had a roll cage but would have had to fab one for a camry. its a load of fun but depending on how rough a road you're on it will be hard as hell on your car. you'll also probably want to loose at least the rear sway bar to help get power down. the live axle isn't going to give good traction as it is. have fun and when you wreck (not if) do it gracefully and you'll roll away with minor damage. always check your exhaust hangers after a session as i always knocked mine loose.

From what I have read you would be better off with FWD or AWD (best) than RWD. In the rally schools they teach you FWD first and RWD last. You know what that means, RWD is hardest.
I would find a Scooby. Those things are great in the dirt. The new WRX is really cool. But you may be better off getting a cheaper Impeza RS or something.

Damn, it did start!
another answer.
grab an Audi 4000 quattro. Take an 86+ Audi MC engine and the intake manifold off of an 84-85. This will put the throttle body to the front of the car. easier routing of the IC. modify the hell out of the engine. rounor has it that the stock internals are good for 300 hp. I was looking into doing this myself but went with the 7 instead.
do a google search for 4KTQ and you should find people who have done this before.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, but I'm either gonna rally the rex or nothing, I'm getting it real cheap (needs work or course) and am trying to decide what to do with it. It's an 83 Limited so I'll probably restore/mod it. I haven't gotton a good look at the underside so it could be rusted to hell, then it's gonna get parted (to you guys of course) I'm gettin it tommorrow so I'll let you guys know what my plans are then. Peace

Rally FB's
Check out this site:
http://www.milisake.com/~mike/
It is my rough draft of a site, but I have put up the
pictures I have from a recent SCCA ClubRally back in
February. The pictures are at the bottom of the page,
so let it load all the way before you click on any links.
One of these days I'll get it all formatted and looking
as nice as here

I'm interested, too, but not for actually rallying it. I just want the coolest winter beater I could ever get...A "winter rex"!
The only real thing I'll do is jack it up and put bigger wheels on it - Not ridiculous, just bigger. Since I'm not using it to rally, and it really is just a ressurected scrap heap (It's been wrecked real good before), I won't concern myself with gearing it correctly. (Will look to LSD it, though.)
It's just to peel around in the snow with!
So, How does one "jack up" a car, anyway? Can I use the springs that are in it, and just make hollow cylindrical spacers to fit?
