FB owners - why don't you own a Z?
I had a '71 240 that I had mildly modified. I love it. I had the sidedrafts Mikuni set up, with competition headers, mod web cams, etc....suspension...done, with Panasport wheels. The exterior I had keep stock with, with the JDM switch over to the "short" bumbers and light covers. I kinda lost interest in it due to the fact that it was carbed....I had to tune it everything the weather changed....I wish I had a fuel injected system in it...but back then it would have cost me a leg. The system from Japan was over 3 grand w/ elelctronics, fuel injected throttle bodies w/ computer...very tight.
Anyway, the RX-7 has that just right balance of size, weight and somewhat power(stock). Once modified, that 1.3 liter grows to monster...very simple modifications. Since I am a Porche fan, and a previous 944 Carrara owner, the lines of the 2gen strike me. The handling is almost the same, but the "it just feels right" feeling is Mazda. All RX-7 are rare due to it's engine, that is what strikes me the most.
The car that I have enjoyed the most out of all the 7's is the Vert. I love the thing. I am over 80% done with the restoration job. Everyone on the forum should have one. You wanna talk about rare....it is the only RX-7 series in history to have a convertable from factory.
Oppsss, this subject was supposed to be on the Z's....

I had a 72 240z, headers, downdraft mikunis, headers, suspension, widebody kit, interior bar, suspension goodies.... that car was a blast!
As far as weight, someone said 2800#, maybe for the zx but not the z's especially the early ones. Under 2200# is a bit closer.
For being a 72 the interior didn't give anything up the a FB, the guages are way cool, give you the vintage sports car racing feeling!
Now I just wanna see what I can make a rotary do...

Wow, I'd love to have the 280ZX or even the 280Z; the ZX was my first dream car. I still want one, as I think they look really cool and they've got a lot of power (my uncle had one back in the early 90's). Hopefully, someday I'll be able to get one. I love that Datsun Inline 6! I still like my FB alot.

This exact thread is a repeat, BTW.
When I was about six, the coolest car that I had ever seen at that time was my uncles new 240 Z. It's the first car that I can remember capturing any of my attention at all.
My choices are as follows:
Porsche 904.
72 Triumph GT.
Datsun 240Z.
Opel GT.
Mazda Rx-7.
I would be ever so happy with any of these cars. The Rx-7 has the least appealing body style of all of them to me, but certainly the most appealing engine.
The upswept tail on all of the other cars mentioned is what "does" it for me. They are what I call, "Timeless styled" bodies. The air drag coefficients may make you cringe by todays standards, but visually, you'll not see the need for an attached aftermarket spoiler, or other crap.
The bodies of those cars have been taken beyond that point at which any major improvement coud be made.
I don't know much about the 904...They are super rare, not even production, I don't think. The 956 is the same body, but lacks the upswept tail.
The Triumph, Datsun, and Opel all have enough of their own problems each that if you were ever able to afford the proper time and expense, you certainly would concider them "don't touch" cars, as well! (As rxstasy said.)
I also think that the first gen Rx-7s were the last production car to make an attempt at that same "timeless style". It screams of the early Datsun design; as a 240Z re-created in the Jetson's era. Just look in some books that have preliminary sketchs of the car. These sketchees started in the mid seventies, and you can't tell me that the success of the Z cars did'nt have anything to do with the Rx-7 design.
Mazda reasearched specifically the American market, for Gods sake!
If I'm not mistaken, the Porsche 924 came out at about the same time? By the fact that the sketchs are dated years earlier, I believe it to be sheer coincidence that the Rx-7 first generation resembles very closely the Porsche 924 and 944s.
And they are all Japanese versions or answers to the European sportscar productions.

There's a complete Opel GT, not sure what year over at a local junkyard. It's been sitting for ages, but it looks like it was hardly picked over. Unfortunately, you'd probably have to shell out a lot for the car, because the owner is a jerk.
I was looking at a Z but all I could afford was a 2+2 280Z and I really wanted a 2 seater 240Z
Plus Rx7's are undervalued over here so i picked up a nice car for less money than I orginally wanted to spend SWEET
A 240Z 2 seater is on my wish list though
along with a toyota corolla 2000GT (MK1)
oh and an FC & an FD and a .... well we can all dream can't we

One of my first cars was a 79" 280 2+2 and that thing had some decent power. I ended up wrecking being stupid, (in excess of the 130 mph speedo) racing some guy on new years eve of all times to be screwing around, and obviously totalled it. Have you ever been in a car when it's rolling over? Felt like a damn wash machine on spin cycle, i thought it was never going to stop. I count my lucky stars everyday after that one because i walked away with only a scratch on my shoulder and a bruise from a crecent wrench that nailed me in the ribs. After that, I was searching for another one when i came across a 79" sa22c with perfect paint and interior. The owner said the engine was seized so i picked it up for $500 bucks, took it home, tinkered with it and determined that the motor was not seized. Ended up being the starter was so clogged with motor oil and dirt that it wouldn't allow the starter to turn. I took the starter apart and cleaned it up, put in a fresh battery and it fired right up after sitting for 2 yrs. That how i got hooked on rotaries...
I'm no Z fan but wasn't there a 260z with an aluminum engine?
I still think the first gen rx7 is the better looking car and with the exception of the pointy windows(cars today are round going from front to top) and maybe the flip up headlight/hood angle, it is still a beautiful car. The guages are also starting to date, but the Z and it's cosmo approach to style never shoulda made it past 1980, especially the headlights and bumpers. Kinda reminds me of a cheap 70's corvette.

I have owned a 1976 280Z, 1972 240Z, 2 x 1985 GSL-SE and now the Turbo II. I would have to say the GSL-SE was funnest car threw the twisties but you know everytime I see an old Z car...I just want to get another one. They are great cars, they started this whole thing with Japanese sports cars. As far as expensive to repair, were not talking about 3rd or 2nd gen parts here. There cheap compared to what we are used to. I could have a brand new 240Z with as much money as put into the TII. One day I'd like to get another 240Z...I'm thinking maybe a RB26DETT or the LS6 motor in the ZO6. Weight wise the 240Z is super light. I believe it is lighter then the 1st RX7. Heck they used cardboard for a glove compartment box.

I dont think the 260z had an alluminum engine, the 240z was 1970-73, 260z was only 1974, 280z was 75-79? not too sure on that last date... My uncle had a 260z when I was a kid, it just sat in my grandmas garage and wouldnt run. About a year ago me and my dad towed it home, we couldnt fix it either, and when I bought my FB I lost interest in trying to fix it any more and got my FB running great. I really love both cars, but the rotory engine is the thing for me, I love having something that most people dont even know how the f*ck it works.
I wanted a Z for a while, just so I could trick out the engine. Build up some huge beast motor
. But, I havent found one yet. Theres actually one for sale over by me, its an inline 6, I htink that makes it a 240 right? Its red, but its kinda rough. Anyway, if I was to buy a car in the "Z" series, it would have to be a 1990 or newer Nissan 300ZX. Oh my God, those are sexy cars. It would have to be a two seater twin turbo 5 speed though

he pulls high 13's with it. With me in the pseat we ended quarters in low 14's at around 104mph. Take offs were a blast, feet floating off the floor
Last time I heard, he was going to add a larger turbo and a blue bottle
Too bad he's up in MI and I'm down here in MO, would be a blast to race against him.

go yo 3rotor.com and in the videos section under speed kings there is a 240 with a LS1 engine with a centrifigal supercharger. It is the tightest car that I know to exist.
the download is very worth it.
