on and 84-85, you pull the fan and temp ***** off, and there is a 14mm nut behind each one. then you pull the ashtray out and there are two screws. then you need to pop the shifter plate off, and then the center panel can slide out. there are two light bulbs that get twisted off, and then that's it.
then the radio unscrews

81-83 i think there are two screws on top, vertically. two near the bottom, and then you unscrew the climate control *****, and then it should almost fall off

I'll post a pic tomorrow of how I made my space work. It's different than most people have done it but I like it and it works for me. In my 84 I did a single din with 3 gauges mounted underneath it in brushed steel.
ok got it all off, ran into a small problem...i cant find the speaker wires to the front and rears anybody got a pic of what that plug looks like, the one i connected it to wouldnt turn them on or anything....anybody?

The speaker wires are run from the factory amplifiers in most RX-7s instead of the head unit. Depending on the year of the car, the amps will either be under the drivers seat and left rear bin or one under each rear bin.
It's been a long time since I messed with FB stock stereo stuff, but wasn't there a round DIN cable that ran from the stereo to the fader joystick, from the joystick to the cargo bin amps, then from the amps to the speakers?
Anyway, with an aftermarket head unit you can't use any of that. Run new speaker wire. It's pretty easy to do in these cars.

OOOO ok so run new speaker wires eh, yea i found the diagram that shows the colors to the speaker wires and i found 2 plugs one for the rear and one for the front, the aftermarket jumper harness doesnt come with 2 just one, so im assuming i am going to have to run separate wires eh?
that does make more sense get some speaker wire and just re-run them.
Anybody running the factory speakers with aftermarket head unit, how are they?

Ok I got it all working and wired them directly to new headunit. I must say the stock speakers don't sound too shabby at all, once you start going higher in volume they start to show their age. But I was able to trim the factory face plate to mount my single din 7" stereo and its herrafrush and came out very clean, pics to come, thanks to m boy israel for all his smart ideas (driftinmyfc)
After quite a bit of trimming to the factory opening for stock stereo i was able to flushly fit my new head unit. works/fit's like a glove, i love it. head unit does no retract it so it will cover the ash try location.
the bottom where the equalizer is will have 3 gauges for my nitrous setup.
