FB dreams

Greetings all,
now just gone a month in my 89 FC auto, and i'm really digging the whole rotary scene ! my car's far from show-stopping but I was out to get the best condition sports-car i could with funds availible, which was err, not much. ; )

Anyway, now that my finances aren't nearly so rocky i've been thinking about what i'd be doing to the fc first, paint job? manual trans? new turbo?decent sound-system? and the more i got thinking about it, the more it made sence to look at maybe keeping the fc as is, and saving up the dosh to do an FB right up... frankly they can look better, they're lighter and the lack of electronic everything (mechanical things are so much easier to fix, if not as "cool") is all a bonus

Currently thinking; street-ported 13b turbo with a mild-boost T- 04 turbo, to a supra 6-speed if i can find one for a decent price, pod intake and decent exhaust etc... anyone have a rough idea what sort of horsepower this would give?

The other thing i was contemplating- sacreligiously (?) chopping the top! i've seen a few pics of convertible conversions out there... anyone with personal experiance? how much extra chassis bracing is needed, if any? i've been sketching it out, bassed on the MR2 hood- int the metal, do they look completely dicky with the hood up? or would i be better advised to do something akin to the ferrari 355 spyder with the trailing bits for the sake of retaining the lines?

cheers all,
Adrian

The Convertible thing... stay away from it... you have to do soooooo much work reinforcing the frame after (the roof is a structural part of all SA's and FB's), that the car'll weigh another 200lbs... at least...

I think 200lbs is a huge understatement...
A buddy of mine has a vert 1st gen with a killer pineapple racing streetport motor in it.....
I flat out killed him in my mostly stock 85 GS. All because of the weight, hes about as good of a driver as me....

The street-ported 13B T-04 is a good idea, chopping the top is not.

Here in the States, at least, the TII was never offered with a manual. Plus, why would you ever want to drive a slushbox?

Well, for racing applications, it's pretty easy to take advantage of big boost with a torque converter...as well as the fact that an auto-car will be much easier on driveline components in a high-hp combo, resulting in less breakage and more money to spend on race gas.

I understand that the TII never came with an auto, that wasn't my question.

I agree that a stick is more fun to drive, but at the track, it's the auto that usually comes out on top. So "you should ALWAYS have a turbo manual" doesn't make any sense. I was hoping that maybe the author of that quote would enlighten me as to what crack he was smoking when he said it, that's all.

The easiest way to get a turbo rotary in a first gen is usually to order up a Cosmo set-up from an importer - and since the Cosmo was only available in auto form, it seems to me that turbo+auto wouldn't exactly be rare.
