FB Big Brake Setup -- Components Selected
I've been researching components to make a big brake kit for my FB track days car, and I've finally found a setup that satisfies all my requirements:
- fit inside my 15" wheels
- 4 piston caliper from a highly regarded manufacturer
- correct, balanced piston sizes (30mm/34mm)
- 2-piece rotors (hat and disc) so I can get a big rotor with my OE 4X114.3 bolt pattern
- curved vane rotors
What I'll be using:
hub: FC 4-bolt w/ReSpeed bearing adapter
hat: Wilwood hat, originally designed for Datsun 240Z (has correct bolt pattern -- we'll see about the offset)
caliper: StopTech ST40 30/34
rotor: Coleman Racing custom, 315mm dia, 32mm thick
caliper brackets: custom made
This setup won't be cheap, but it should come in at less than the "top of the line" kits for the FC and FD -- and it will fit inside my little 15" wheels!
Any cautions/suggestions?
For those out there who have big brakes, are your calipers mounted leading or trailing? I was planning on trailing, since that's the OE location.

FB+FC=F-ME
I did mine trailing since it seemed logical,although Ive seen the SelectMaz brake kit mounted leading.This setup fit under my 15X7 Centerlines with a little room to spare.With 17's they actually look a little small,but these Advans are about half the weight of my old wheels.The calipers are stock TII and the rotors are a hair under 12",off of some Australian car....Holden something or other,I think???

I like the wheels, too & thanks for the advice on leading vs. trailing.
Now, for the most important decision -- what color should the calipers be? My car's red and I have one set of black wheels and one set of silver ones (both sets are Team Dynamics Pro Race 1).

I have FD rotors and FD caliper on my 1980 SA.
The stock rotor has been machined down, so the FD rotor fits over, bolt pattern was changed to 5x114.3 (FD) and custom caliper bracket was made.

This subject has been covered in some detail many times on this forum in the past year. You could learn quite a bit by doing some searching. In my opinion, you will spend a lot of money and end up with something that is not much better, if any, than a set of 5 bolt 2nd gen brakes. You will probably spend enough more to buy some nice wheels, mostly becuse the 5 bolt pattern is very common and there are so many nice wheels. I used the hubs, brakes and BBS alloy 15 inch wheels from a 1990 RX-7 convertible. These are very light weight wheels, and fit under the fenders without modification. These brakes stop very well, and work perfectly with the stock GSL master cylinder.
I had to use a 1 1/4 inch spacer in the front, none in the rear. With those brakes we determined that calipers mounted in front was the only choice because the rear steering interfered. My machinist and I made all the parts, but now they are available from several sources. The front and rear conversion parts are shown here:

As far as your opinion about the capability of the brakes -- the setup I'm planning will provide significantly more fade resistance. The pads are much larger than the FB pads, and the effective mass of the rotors is far greater. I ran the calcs, and the effective mass (as calculated by the volume of the disc) is more than double for my setup (1,347,738 cubic mm versus 602,880 cubic mm). Let me say that a different way -- the useful portion of the disc is more than twice as big.
Let's be clear here (I covered this in a former post), my objective is not to create more stopping power. My current brakes work fine for stopping the car a few times. What I need is more fade resistance. My car will soon have about 4 times the original HP and I use it regularly on road race courses. You may not need the extra fade resistance, but there are those that do.

I have my calipers in leading position thanks to the respeed kit with no problems,
yes i used the FC 4lug hubs so i keept the 4X114 bolt pattern because i had already got
18X8 wheels. I purchase a set of drilled/slotted TT2 Brake rotors and had them redrilled
to 4X114 bolt pattern. No problems with the setup, stop on a dime! and looks GREAT.
