Fastest N/A 12A
Fastest N/A 12A
I did a search already and didn't find a thread like this, so i figured i would start one.
Who has the fastest naturally aspirated 12a first gen here 1/4 mile wise?
List your mods, times etc.
I personnaly ran a 14.8 @ 92
Mods:
Medium sized street port 12a
ACT HD pressure plate
ACT 4-puck unsprung hub disc
Velocity Powersports (VP) 8.3 lb flywheel
VP ported intake manifold
VP modified Nikki carb
VP full exhaust (header, nocats/resonators Dynomax muffler)
K&N filter in stock air cleaner housing
VP cold/ ram air intake
No rats nest
4.44 rear end w/ racing beat street lsd
Holley blue fuel pump w/ FPR
225/50-15 falken ziex 512's on weds autobahn wheels
This car is a full weight street car, still has spare tire, jack, everything.

I figured the fastest would be a P-port, but I would have thought it would have been a bit faster than 12.2. I was really hoping that it would at least be low 11's, high 10's. That is still damn fast though.

I think you run good times for what you got weedwacker you can expect to run better times with weight reduction and better traction. Mid 14s to low 14s very good!
I have not seen many "extremely" quick N/A 12a FBs in this forum and I have been reading for quite some years already. I guess that most do the switch to turbo before costs vs. performance become prohibitive for the regular Joe to get the n/a 12as to dip well into the 12s/11s...
I'm actually one going turbo EFI. I will try to hit the track in N/A trim once I get the EFI setup before I slap the turbo, but I really doubt I will improve my times which are very similar to yours without "again" stripping my car for racing. I went turbo to get the car streetable and be able to get my full interior back and a sweet stereo system without sacrificing power and noise levels.

I was thinkin Jesus Padilla's FB only had 350 horsepower out of a 13b (well 20b minus one rotor) with a peripheral port, and I thought he was running 9's. I would think 305 would be at least in the tens, though. Of course I don't know the drastic weight reduction that went on with Jesus Padilla's car as opposed to the 12.2 second 12a powered rx7. Any way you look at it, 12's are fast especially for an all motor 1.1 liter (Yeah, let's not get into debates about that one). I just expected it to be a bit quicker. Is there any videos of it doing a pass in the 12's by any chance?
Yeah that's my main reason why I want to build a quick 8 12A. these guys that are running blown 7 liter big blocks running on methanol alcohol getting their asses handed to them by a 1.1 liter motor. I would love to see videos of this as well. Too bad they banned the 3 Rotor and weighted Jesus' car. He was stomping people's asses
It seems plausible for at least a bit more than 305 hp. That was >20 years ago and engine builders have learned somewhat. By using an unrestricted modern fuel system and ignoring some other rules of that time, e.g. rotor weights, etc. maybe 320?
The whole Velocity Powersports thing is the name I gave to all the things that have been made by me. It sounds a lot cooler than saying "homemade" or "i made this." When i finally get approval from the local village board that will be my shop name, if you google it I think you get a dirt bike safety gear company.
I think the car has at least a 14.6 in it without changing anything, it was my first time taking the car to the track and i missed third on that 14.8 pass and got out of the hole like an old lady.
Also, it would probably be faster if i powershifted but i dont like to cause i'm shifting at 9.5-10 grand and a missed shift up there with no rev limiter and my flywheel potentially could get ugly.

weed wacker are you running those 225/50r15 on all 4 corners. I have 15" motoform wheels and want to put 225 on the rear but not sure how they would fit on the front. I thought that a 205/50R15 would be best but let me know please

Blown7- Yes I run that tire on all four corners (I'm a road racer so more rubber everywhere is the only way to go in my opinion), but i did have to roll all four fender lips. it still rubs if you take a tight corner too fast hit a bump real hard and stab the brakes hard at the same time, though.
Come on guys are there only three people here that have gone to the dragstrip with there cars still using 12a's? Have you all succumed to the idea of real horsepower!? What a shame. Have fun messing with corvettes with your boosted 13B's and such, I'll stick with being obnoxiously loud AND slow!
my personal best is 15.421 @ 90.6 mph that is with a 1/2 bridged 12a with a 48 IDA weber tuned for a streetport. Stock gears wheels.
I now have a GSL-SE suspension swap with KYB shocks, eibach springs, RB sway bars, RB 4.44 diff gears. That alone should speed me up but i blew up my clutch two races ago and dont have the cash to put in the new ACT clutch.
Next race season it will be better i have a full bridgeport 12a going in with new parts for my weber to tune it for a bridgeport. I want to see 200 whp and a 13.9 1/4 mile time

I've ran plenty at the strip with bone stock 12A. I mean bone stock too, full stock exhaust with functional catyletic converter, rats nest still intact. So far it's ran an 18.03. With the right conditions it should drop down to mid 17's
Some time ago I researched the topic and looked at the full modifications and cost of different porting set-ups on a 12A NA.
Porting various for different generic specificarions but an indication of what to expect was:-
Bolt-on mods 150hp 14.7 seconds
Streetport 180hp 14.0 seconds
Half bridge 210hp 13.4 seconds
Full bridge 240hp 12.9 seconds
PP 300hp 12.2 seconds
Specific cars varied according to weight loss but I think the information is relatively accurate as a target.
My 12A bolt-on modified with Sterling spec Nikki could do 14.6-14.8 second 1/4s in road trim, but it had a slight advantage with the Jpec 12A engine which was slightly more powerful than the US spec. In contrast, my stock port 12AT with FMIC gets down into the high 12s while set-up as a daily driver.

Paul basically summed it up...
it's difficult to really consider you fast in n/a trim without going to the extreme and even at that it's not as quick.
I have been N/A for over 15 years with FBs...but I have owned several other cars with a lot more power and a hell of a lot more comfortable, but none as fun as the FB. I have only stuck to FBs as far as toying with them for that same reason.
I know I can reliable run 14s with one of my FBs and be streetable to my taste, but I have learned that there are much better platforms to have and to drive both costwise and performance wise, so I don't want to cross the line of being too pro rx7 and sticking only to N/A power. It's just too damn uncomfortable and noisy for my taste already. I'm getting old and my wife even says so, it's increadible how with time you begin to appreciate how that perfect ride should be...
I'm all for N/A power weedwacker and more power to ya, but believe me after a couple of years if you keep being a rotorhead you will change your taste. Obnoxiously loud and slow ain't fun.
Again 14s with your setup is awesome, it feels awesome too when you beat cars that are 10-20 years newer than your car and they go home wondering what happened. If you are up to the challenge, challenge yourself and go PP and all out try to be the fastest N/A 12a out there, not a lot of people have done it...

I took mine to the strip right after I put on the holley, and it had the stock exhaust minus muffler. Unfortunbately I didnt have time to properly tune the holley, so it kind of bogged down at low rpms. Yet I needed to show everyone I worked with (company race day) how much *** rx7's kick regardless!
When I was dialing in for the bracket times, it bogged down horribly and I ran a 12.4 in the 1/8 mile. So I was in the 10 sec and over bracket. I then discovered it was quicker to spin the wheels when the light turned green, as opposed to no whell spin with engine hesitation.
It was my 1st time racing and I was up against a pretty stock 240sx. The light when green MY car when nowhere! I was starting to think something horrible happened and I loked down and was in neutral. I dumped the clutch at about 5grand, and ALMOST won regardless of the 3 second head start.
With being in neutral for 3 seconds, and spinning the tires at the start line I ran a 10.3 in the 1/8th - Later looking at my boss' 1/8 mile converter, thats about a 16 sec flat 1/4 mile
At that time I had: Holley+intake, k&N filter, 1"Carb spacer, ACT Racing clutch, RB springs (Im pretty sure) that I cut some length off of, Terrible shocks, stock wheels, tires, exhaust (-muffler), open rear diff (NON LSD), and a little out of alignment. I think thats pretty good considering.
Being that I almost caught that 240 after the 'head start' that gave the people I worked with new respect for the rx7s

Almost forgot.
I think now with the bugs worked out, and my header / exhaust, I should be in the low 15's at least. Also Im getting at least 20mpg average, between city, highway, and a lot of high revving. It jsut turned 160,000mi. Whats some of your milages with your portings?
