With the engine shut off, see how hard it is to spin the fan. Sounds like the fan clutch is locked up. When that occurs, they are noisy as hell, and really drag the engine down. Kill the power, and fuel mileage goes to lousy.

Inside the fan, bolted to the water pump.
You *should* be able to rotate the fan when the engine is not running. If you cannot, the clutch is toast. There should be a little resistance when spinning the fan, but not a lot.

Actually, the clutch is in between the fan and the water pump. When you replace it, you unbolt it from the fan, so its not technically IN the fan Just pretend youre playing wheel of fortune and try and spin the fan with the engine off and tell us how hard it is.

Hmm I have a similar problem... do the clutches wear out all of the sudden or slowly over time ? I havent had a thermostat for a while, and now that I put one in, the fan is running all the time pretty much, but before it wasnt running as hard.

I have a spare clutch+fan from a nissan pintara, would it be a problem putting that on instead? Would they have different temperatures ?

Cheers
