(Video) Exhaust Sound & Measure before & after...

'83 GSL
Full Mindtrain (headers, cat with presilencer, deep throats muffler, etc.)
K&N
Everything else stock 120K on the 12a engine.

I measured the decibels of idle and rev both before and after putting the exhaust on. I must say I like the way it sounds now much better. One thing to note. I'm using a camcorder here and it really doesn't pick up the low end frequencies. It sounds much deeper in person. I used a decibel meter from Radio Shack to measure the decibels. I'm assuming it's accurate enough for this test.

Ambient Noise on one of the days was 66 db as a reference.

Stock
86 db @ Idle
98 db @ Rev

Mindtrain
93 db @ Idle
108 db @ Rev

Here's the video...

Comparison Video

One of these days I'm gonna measure what it sounds like under load accelerating. I think it's louder then. :-)

Where to by Mind-Train...

Off the top of my head (need coffee) I can't remember the guys name, but, he did a great job taking care of everything. The nice thing about doing through him is that I could use paypal.

http://www.kickyride.com/

He sells parts at this site as well.

He resells for Fred from Mind-Train. If you want a catalog, you can get one from Mind-Train. They don't have a website. I can get you a number if you need one.

That sounds ALOT like my car. My setup is the RB Header/Presilencer and a Magnaflow single in dual out muffler. The sound file was recorded with a digicam so the quality isn't the best, but it's cool nonetheless.

Check it out:

Hey, thats the same dB meter that I have. Where did you take the reading from? I would like to see what the readings are inside the car under acceleration. My exhaust is custom, without a header. When I took the reading, it was 110 dB just cruising at 3000 rpm. I had stock manifold to 30" long cherry bomb to 3" pipe over the axle to an 18" long magnaflow single in dual out. Now I have replaced the cherry bomb with a turbo style muffler. MUCH quieter and sounds just as throaty. Probably the deepest rotary exhaust I have ever heard (read as heard. I can't tell if it really is the deepest because most sound clips SUCK).

Ill tell ya, I have a RB Header, presilencer, and a Borla muffler, the dmned thing must hit well above 110db! I god damn love it driving through a tunnel........... I have to hook a DB tester up to it before I put the Turbo on it so I can get a reading. The Borla is a solid *** muffler!

...must record more...

I think I'll get out the sound meter & camcorder and see what I can come up with. I'm thinking...

db inside going down the road
db outside during a hard acceleration pass in 2nd gear
db in underpass would be nice too...heheh

BTW the meter was about 3 or 4 feet from exhaust just off to one side in the last video.

Heheh...I look for all the roads that have underpasses on my way to work. My commute keeps getting longer & longer ;-)

I will post some more clips. Thanks for the complements :-)

On the way to work today I checked the noise level inside the cabin during local driving. In 2nd gear it was around 103 db.

I know it is louder going down the highway. More to come....
