exhaust manifold question

exhaust manifold question

i got a '84 gsl se and i just dropped the motor in after a fresh rebuild and i have a terrible exhaust leak at the top of the manifold and all the bolts are as tight as i can get them has anyone had this issue? fyi new gasket is installed

You need to pull the manifold back off and use a straightedge to check it's mounting flange for warping.

You also need to be sure you are torquing the bolts properly, and in the proper order, and not just going "as tight as you can." Over tightening or tightening out of sequence/unevenly can cause warping and leaks.

Also, make sure the flange and the blockface are very clean, all bits of the old gasket gone. Even a little lump can cause a lot of leak.

....and make sure that the gasket is installed correctly (not upside down, or backwards).
