Headers and a straight pipe would be not practical for the street. I don't know if you have ever heard an NA rotary with a header and open pipes but they are VERY loud. They make the 4 bangers with the same setup sound quiet.

I would recommend a RB header and presilenser into a Magnaflow muffler.

They are quality and have stainless packing. They also sound very well.

Header backs are super loud.

Glasspacks will melt within a few months if you are lucky.

Main Headers are Racingbeat, or Mazdatrix.

Main Exhaust choices are Racingbeat, Borla, and Magnaflow.

Stay away from anything Pacesetter.

I would recommend silencing that exhaust somehow. If you use a straight pipe your ears will bleed. I fired up my 85 GS with open headers one time and I thought my garage was going to fall in on itself. Loud is not the word to describe it. Even with your fingers in your ears it still hurts.... Unbeliveable....

I don't remember any stock silencers... Are you talking about the catalytic converters? Most FB's have this setup: Manifold > cat > cat > cat > centerpipe > muffler. You should be able to get a NICE presilencer from Racing Beat. They quiet the rotary down a lot, and last for ever. On the downside they are a little heavy...

The rotary burns pretty dirty, which has always been one of its downfalls. It takes a lot of catalytic converters to clean up the ol' 12A apparently. As a matter of fact it takes 3! While they do help quiet down the exhaust quite a bit, their main function is to preserve the air that you and I enjoy breathing so much.

Lose the cats. Go with a RB header and presilencer. If you can afford it, get the complete RB system. If not, substitute a Borla muffler.
