Engine wont start when the key wont turn...

So my key keeps getting stuck, it's a 23 year old key and the only one I have for this car. The copy I had made was wishful thinking on my part, so now I'm thinking about using a series of switches instead of replacing the assembly.

How labor intensive do you think this project would be? Am I going to be forced to figure out the wiring on my own or does anyone know which wires coming in do what? I guess I could try and find a diagram but those can be a pain to read :P

Anyway, what do you guys think? If I do it I'll probably take step by step pics.

Better off just wiring it straight up to the starter...with a kill switch hidden somewhere else for the fuel pump and your in the game...Making a push start is not that labor crazy and shouldn't take long at all...

I've been thinking about using a series of switches that have to be turned on/off in a particular sequence along with a push button start switch as a low-tech security system. haven't gotten around to it yet, though...

If I wire it straight to the starter I wont have the option of turning the system to accessory mode or "start" mode will I?

Oh....uh. Duh. I'll have to find out later then. I haven't even considered that. Man, I feel pretty stupid.

I'm amazed my key still works. Probably see if I can get a replacement at some point.

That sounds like a great idea! I'm actually planning to install a push button start soon. Not for any particular reason, just because it looks cool. How wouldabout installing a push start that would allow the ignition yo be "on" without the motor running? could i install a kill switch that turns the ign power on when it is turned on? I'll search it now, but i thought i'd ask since this thread is alredy on the topic.

BTW, that steering wheel lock is deffinately the first thing to check, sometimes when the wheel is turned away from center when it locks it locks pretty hard and you won't be able to turn the key without turning it to the side a bit. It's happened to me before and the first time i messed around for like an hour trying to figure out what was wrong with my ignition switch/steering collumn untill i grabbed the wheel and shook the crap out of it in anger, at which point the key turned easily. LOL

Some modern cars have the push button set-up where you press it and the car turns on, if you hold it for a few seconds the car cranks over and starts.

I would guess its a small computer type switch like you'd find on a motherboard or something?
