Engine / transmission combo?????

I had my 85' 13b engine rebuilt a little while ago. When he rebuilt the engine he used 86 13b rotor housings and 86 parts. Now, the other day, when I tried to put the tranny back in to mate up with the engine it won't fit. There is at least a 3/4" gap between the bell housing and the rear cover of the engine to which it bolts up to. I measured the output shaft of the tranny and the input to the flywheel to the inside of the engine and there was the difference right there. The output shaft was 3/4" or so too long. Question: What do I do?

Thanks in advance guys

Justin

i odnt know if it the same thing but i swap an engine with a 79 e-shaft into an 83, and the shaft (i think its the same one as what you've described) was about 8mm too long.

i asked the guys at rotormotion (local rotary workshop) and they said just to grind it back

i did and it fits beatuifully, just need to make sure you dont take off too much (better to measure twice and cut once)

that'd mean you have an almost complete 86 engine, as 85 13b housings aren't interchangable with 86 sideplates. (seal grooves have been relocated)
apart from that, this sounds odd. There's no reason why the tranny shouldn't bolt up to the engine. Are you sure everything is lined up properly? The shaft from the box should slide into the clutch etc.

Everything lines up bud.

yeah, everything is in alignment from what I can see. I may need to grind it down a bit but am not sure if this can be done by plugin' in a grinder an pealin' away at the end of the shaft or do I need to bring it to a machinist with a lathe.

Talk with ya later fella....thanks

also...

you would be correct in the housing oil seals area.....I guess what I have here is an 86 engine with an 85 tranny .......ok then, would that work with grinding the shaft down a bit?

Something doesn't sound right here. If a TII tranny will bolt up to an S3 13B then the N/A tranny will also. If you have both trannys on hand, then put them side by side and compare them. You should find the only difference is the length of the shifter housing and the tranny mount.

Sounds like you didn't use a clutch alignment tool. The last tranny I put in I couldn't get the tranny all the way in, even with lining it up with the tool. Finally had to use a spare input shaft to get the clutch lined correctly.

Alignment Tool

YEAH....That may be what I need to do. I'll get the tool and see if that helps. Then I'll take the next, more drastic, step. Thanks for input fella.
