engine starving for fuel?

engine starving for fuel?

when driving my 85 rx7 in 4th and 5th gear there are points where it feels that it is starving for gas, it accelerates then stops then accellerates and stops again...not sure if its the carb doing it or its something else...any ideas?

Surging is usually a lean condition, too little fuel. When is the last time you changed the fuel filter? Also if you get on it hard say 1st thru 3rd floored does it lose power at the end?rx7doctor

ya, it loses power toward the end of 1-3 gears, u think adjusting the carb the give more fuel would help?

fuel filter is brand new, just gave the car a full tune up...new fluids everywhere...new plugs, wires filters...etc

First i have to ask how long have you owned this car? How long have the symptons been present? Adjusting the carb is only for a/fuel mixture, not for power bands. You need to perform a fuel pressure/volume test. It's either losing pressure under full
throttle and extended driving. Are you having power loses uphills, if there are any in your area. rx7doctor Been on the computer too long, starting to make alot of spelling errors,lol.

just bought the car...has 220k on it...um, not many hills here so im not sure, im new to the rx-7 so im not sure how to check the pressures myself, tools arent a problem just not sure how to work on a rotary

any help will be sweet

also the lights on my gauge cluster dont work and the temp and fuel gauge doesnt read...do i need a new cluster or can those me fixed?

maybe its something electrical? Im pretty sure in my rx7 the fuel pump is shot, took off the one hose at the carb and no gas came out even with the ignition turned on

don't be intimidated about working on your engine. Testing is like any other engine. Get yourself a haynes manual, it will explain how to do the fuel pressure/ volume test. The only tools you need is a fuel pressure gauge for carbureted vehicles, fuel hose, clamps and a 5/16 tee. Get enough 5/16 hose that you can tape the gauge to the window so you can see what the pressure is when you get on it. The volume test is easy as explained in the repair manual. With 220k on her i would do a compression test. Again it's straight forward and we use a conventional compression tester. Also explained in the haynes manual. As far as the gauges fo the fuse marked meter controls the gauges. the dash lights are controlled by the dial switch to the right of the mirror switch. Check to make sure it is not dialed to the off posistion. Other wise it's common for the dimmer switch to fail on the 84-85 models. It is easily bypassed. After you hav edone your testing if their are no abnormalities there, have the cats checked to make sure they are not clogged or partially clogged. Welcome to the rx7 world of fun,lol rx7doctor

if its not fuel, it could be your spark plug wires also. I had a problem with a brand new magnecor so I went back to stock NGK. thats after several hours of adjusting the carb and fuel pressure.

getting a new cat tomorrow in hopes of passing my smog test, ill go ahead and get myself a haynes manual and follow the directions

as for my gauges all the fuses are new, im worried about not being able to see how much gas i have...havent been able to judge the mileage yet

thanks but I alreayd switched to MSD 10mm. Man, I love LA junkyards. FC spark plugs in my pockets and spark plug wires around my waist. Good for emergencies

Haynes may explain how to do volume/pressure test, but it'll be missing an important step: bypassing the fuel pump relay, since the earlier models didn't have it. The online FSM should be used instead:

What's up cd, it does have the procedure in it on page 253, also in chilton manual also. Just thought i would update you and others that are looking for this in their
